The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1886. PASTORAL SHOWS.
Fate, in the form of bad weather, ha ß warred against the success of the Wair arapa and East Coast Pastoral Show for two years past aud it wag almost regarded as a matter of course that it should rain to-day, We heard weather experts forboditig a storm yesterday aud wero delighted to find that the anniversary of the Pastoral Society has at 'least the advantage of a fine morning, ■ Tlio energetio management of the South Wairarapa Sooiety have had -a good deal to contend with of late. Their financial arrangements have been upset by unpropitious elements on their show days, and the formation of a Northern Society of a similar character has taken away a blicb oi their buuiaess. The Committee of the Society have, however, borne their misfortunes with the utmost good humor and patienoe, and we sincerely trust that the gun will shine upon them to-day, and compensate them for some of their bad luck, They have best wishes of the settlers of. Wairarapa North; for the competition between the two sections of the district; in Pastoral Shows is a friendly one, and we look forward to the time when it may be possible to merge the two existing Sooieties into one. We observe that a Wellington contemporary urges the establishment of a Central Pastoral Show for the colony at the Empire City, which will put even the Christchurch Exhibitions in the shade. Jf the Wellington people see their way to carry through such an undertaking, no doubt tthe Wairarapa will do its share towards supporting it but we fear that there is no site in Wellington suitable for a •Pastoral Show on a large scale. The only Wellington site which could be made at all fit is the Island Bay .Race Course, and that in mauy respects would prove an ineligible one, As yet there is really no first class Pastoral Show in the Wellington Provincial District, The Wairarapa, if united, might produce one, but while it is divided we can scarcely hope to emulate our neighbors in Hawkes Bay.'
A notice of insolvency by Mr Jacob Bambor appeal's in another column.

Brown and Co., Queen-street, They are composed of steel wire, and-' possess among other qualifications, the reputation, of beins; lighter, cheaper, and cleaner than any other kind bown.
_ A telegram from Welliugton this morning states that to-day is observed' as a general holiday there on account ot the ceromouy of driving the last spike of the Manawatu Railway- by His Excellency the Governor, and that a train containing 1000 guests left there for. Waikanae at ten a.m., and that about 500 people left for Carterton to attend the Wairarapa Agricultural and Pastoral Show.
. Our reporter at tho Pastoral grounds Carterton telegraphs to us as follows : The show is likely to be a groat success as all entries with few exceptions are on tho ground. Tho quality of the exhibits, with the exception of cattle whioh are rather low in condition, is fully equal to previous years. The show of horses ospocially in light and heavy weight hack classes aro splendid. Most of the sheep shorn aro looking well. Produce makes a fair bliow butter, being a strong point. Thero is every prospects of a large attendance.
The lighting of the lamp presented to the Borough by His Worship the Mayor last evening was the subject of some little joking. As the painter had only just put on the finishing touches it was found advisable to place a ladder agaiu&t it. To get over tho difficulty the Town Clerk's assistant, Mr R'iohard's, hunted up a pair of steps, which the Town Clerk mounted, but found them to be a few inches too short. Or Gapper camototho rescue with several statute books, and the light was plaoed inside, but here another difficulty ooourred. An iron ridge on the bottom of the holder prevented the lamp standing. The ingenuity of Or Chamberlain got over the dilemma, and the handsome lamp was shown off to the admiriug'gaze of tho whole of the Counoil and a number of spectators who had assembled.
The lamp presented to tho Borough by His Worship the Mayor is rather an imposing piece of work, and an ornament to the public Institute, standing as it does at the corner of that building and abutting on Chapel and Perry streets, An octagonal brick and cement pedeotal, about six feet in height has been erected to carry the cast-iron standard, which is of an ornamental class, having a spiral column and scroll work base. On the foot of the standard is an inscription cast in the metal "Presented by M. Caselberg, Mayor, 1886." The lamp, which is surmounted by a small pildod spire, is painted whito on the inßide, and the following information is written on tho four sides:-" Free Reading Room," "Public Library," " Mastorton Institute," " Council Chambers." When lit up last evening it attracted a large browd of adinjvefs, the bronzed standard lookiug admirable.
