Palmerston North, November 1. A serious acoideht happened to a ohild named Doreen, daughter of a local residonk on Saturday. The child was playing by the fire in the absence of its pareuts, when its dress was caught by the flames, whioh spread rapidly, and were only extinguished by somo passers by whon she had boen fearfully burned about tho legs and back, It is thought that she will die of the effects. The child is at present iu an unconscious state. Oamaru, November 1. A man named John Alcherley, ongaged at Redcasfcle made a deliberate attempt to committ suicide by cutting his throat with a razor yesterday. He is in a critical state, and is to be removed to the hopital,
