The Great Barrier Murder.
Uxitri) Piu:-s Association. Auckland, October 27. The steamer Wailm, having on board Caffroy, Pen 11, and the girl Graham, charged as murderers and accessory to the Great Barrier tragedy, arrived at 1 o'clock this morning. There was a considerable crowd 011 the wharf, including Pemi's father who shouted to the prisoner "Never iniud my boy we've got Napier to defend you." The hoodlums iti the crowd cheered Penn, who manifested a bold, defiant, and jaunty air, while Caffroy seomed cowod and spiritless. Tho male prisoners were heavily manacled, log irons being rivotted on. The three prisoners, along with a young man named Forsyth, arrested at Sydney for forgery, were placed in cabs and conveyed to tho lock up. On the voyage, Caffroy and Penn were very quiet, and were occassionally allowed to have their liandouffs off, when they played ouohw with great enjoyment. The girl Graham alleges that Penn did not hold Taylor whou Caffroy fired tho revolver, Slio stataa that Caffroy drank .11 whole bottle of rum before going aaliore at the Great Barrier, and attributes the murder to his being drunk. During tho voyage in the Sovereign of tho Seas they ran short of water and suffered greatly from thirst, but Caffroy says "Providence sent rain," which they caught in buckets, &c.~ During that time Miss Graham wore mail attire, and Penn never went to bed without saying his prayers, There was a tremendous crush at the Polico Court this morning it being known that the prisoners would be brought up. Later. Caffroy, Peuu, and Sarah Cleary, alms Grace Graham, were;brought up at the Police Court this morning, before Mr H. P. Seth Smith, R.M., tho two former beini; charged with tho Wilful Murder of Robert Taylor, and the girl with being an accessory after the fact. Mr Hudson Williamson, Crown Prosecutor, conducted the prosecution. Mr W. J. Napier appears for Penn, and Messrs Jackson and Palmer for Caffroy. Mr Brassey is watching the case on behalf of Taylor's family. Mr Napier applied to have the girl Cleary released, but tho Bench declined to accede to tho application. All tho three prisoners were remanded till Friday weok. Mr Brassey, 011 behalf of Mrs Taylor and family, has laid a separate information for murder, which may cause complications.
