The appointment! of teachers to the Taita, Tauoruand Porirua Schools were considered by the Education Board at yestoalay's andafter duo deliberation settled, subject to consultation with tho respective committees, when they will be made public. It has been found that tho publication of such appointments prior to the Committees beinsr consulted, as required by thu Act, has led to difficulties in the past.—Evening Press. Our Carterton correspondent writes In reference to thu man Wheatlcy who was found dead in his bed yesterday ho was an elderly man aud a widower and lived by himself and 1 don't think he has any relations hereabouts. By the appearance of tho body thu doctor thinks ho must have been dead several days, A post mwtem examination will tako place at 10 o'clock' to-day, and the inquest at 2 p.m, at Mr Hodgin's Taratahi Hotel where the body has been removed to. When considering the question of uncertified tcaohers yesterday morning, the Chairman of the Education Board, Mr J, R. Blair, mentioned that there were three teachers who had been given two years already in whiali to pass the necessary examination, aud they had failed to do so, 110 suggested that theso teachers should be reduced from £IOO per annum to £3O if they did not take immediate steps to pass, and this was agreed to,--Evening Press,

"Nemo" in the Pahiatua Star writes : —"Jerusalem ! what a ntory that was you copied from the Times about our Village Settlement. Sixty-five families on it and all doing well. Great Scott! what a writer of fiction the man who put that paragraph together would be. He'd knock Jules Verne into a cocked hat. But it is too bad, for tho sake of' other poor men, publishing such garbled reports as that. When 1 read it, it altogether knocked the wind out of me."

A man came in from the Puketois on Thursday last, having met with au accident while bush-felling, It appears ho was clearing supplejacks from around a treo with a hook, and the weapon glanced off the wood oil to his forehead, just above the loft eyo, inflicting a nasty gash. Tho man went to Mr Yeats for assistance and we are informed that it was almost a miracle that-tho hook did not pierce tho eyo, in which caso 1033 of sight must have followed. Mr Yeats carefully dressod tho wound and the man returned home. -Pahiatua Star. The Chairman of the Education Boardi Mr J. R, Blair, made an important proposal to tho Board yesterday morning with regard to tho scholarships to the oity and country schools. Ho suggested that owing to the additional expenses to candidates, tho Waiiarapa and country schools scholarships should remain at £3O He thought, however, that in only giviug five scholarships, as at present to the city of £3O and four at £2O, they were not fulfilling tho intentions of the Trust, and suggested that instead they should give eleven- scholarships of £l2 each, On the motion of Mr Bunny this was agreed to.—Press. Wo understand efforts aro about to do made to form a Mounted Ride Corps in Masterton. With a judicious selection of officers there can be 110 doubt such a company would bo highly successfui. In tho present Volunteers there aro a number who have to rido in from the country to parades, and these men would hail with pleasure the formation of suoh a corps, and there aro, 110 doubt, plenty of young fellows in tho town who would join a company of this description, who take 110 interest in the present foot Volunteering. There aro five corps already in the Valley, and if the proposed mounted compauy is formed, a battalion can bo constituted, entitling the district to a number of additional officers, viz., a Lieutenant-Colonel, two Majors, an adjutant, and a Sorgeant-Major. They would be quite indepondant of tho Staff Officers. The formation of a battalion would not in any way interfere with the present corps, who would manage their own affairs as hitherto. We wish this movement every success, as it is likely to give Volunteering a fresh impetus, which wo fear it sadly needs at the present time. We hear the Masterton Volunteers, on tho completion of the drill shed intend to go in for a week's drilling previous to the proposed emcampmeut. "Venetian Blind and Rovolving ijkttor manu actory, All Blind* guaranteed of the very best description, Prico list on application to R, W. We hoar that Mr Rcnall is initiating a requisition to the Mayor to convene a public meeting on the question of dividing t!io borough into wards. This is a much more satisfactory way of going .hi work than his former proposal to diroctly petition for four wards and place the question before the public in a legitimate manner.
