Mr Von Sturmor, who is abuut to take up his residence in Masterton as Resident Magistrate for the Wairarapa has been located in Hokianga for nmcteen years. Tho annual meeting of the Groytown Horticultural Society was held on Saturday evening, Tho report and balance sheet wero adopted and officers elected for the ensuing year. It was decided to hold the Spring show on Thursday, 9th December, We notico among the judges tho names of Messrs Everett and Vile of Masterton.
In the Government Gazette of 14th inst,, the following lands were proclaimed state forosts in the Wellington Provincial district:—All that pioeo or parcel of land being part of Block 1., Makun Survey District, Provincial District of Wellington, containing approximately 200 acres. Bounded towards tho North-east by the Manawatu River; towards tho South-east by Section No. 5, Crown lands, and the abuttals of two public roads, 6400 links, more or less; and towards the West and South-west by the Tiraumea Rivor. Also all that piece or parcel of land situate in Block VII,, Pohangina Survey District, containing approximately 1,000 acres. Bounded generally towards the North and East by Crown lauds, commencing at a point where tho production of a line through Trig. Stations E and 7 meets tho Pohangina River; thence Southeasterly along said line, 14 chains; thence by a line due south to tho Manwtuatou stream j thence Weaterley along said stream to its junction with the Pohangina River; thence Northerly along said Pohangina River to the starting-point: as the samo is more particularly delineated ion topographical map ot the Pohangina Survey District, deposjted in the office of the Chief Surveyor, Wellington, A fair attendance grcotod tho .lecture given by the Rov. D. J. Murray in the Wesleyan Church last night in aid of the Home Mission fund. The Rov. D. Fulton occupied the chair, and called upon tho Rev. J. Ward, of Greytown, to read a report of the Homo Mission work. Mr Ward said as they were no doubt anxious to hear tho lecture ho would briefly slate the objects for which this fund was inaugurated, chiefly among thorn being:—to carry on tho mission work among tho Maoris of Now Zealand, help to give to young and feeblo churehos in thinly populated districts, also to tho building of churches and parsonages, and for the education of students in Auckland. Tho amount expended last year was £2045, the income being only £2SGO, leaving a debtor balance of £BS. Having stated the amount expected to be raised in Masterton towards this fund, Mr Ward resumed his seat amidst applause. The Chairman then called upon the Rev. D. J. Murray, who expressed his pleasure at being .enabled to visit the Wairarapa, He stated, as an apology for the ordinary Homo Mission services, that he was giving tliis lecture at the special request of the Rev. J. Ward. The title of his lecture would be "Mind your P's andQ's." flegavo a short accouut as to what induced him to got up this lecture, and during the whole of the discourse displayed great ability. Mr Murray has a good delivery, and speaks very distinctly, and we feel assured, that should he ever visit this district again, lie will find a larger audience' assembled to hear him., Votes of thanks were passed to tho lecturer, chairman, the Rev. J. Ward, and the choir, and the meeting closed with the Benodiction,

The chargo made was that a tradosman (who is a justice of the peace) tried to force a widow to submit tosomo improper proposals, and then endeavored to damago her character and take away her living. The Bell suggosts ill order to bviiiy out the incidents in thoir enormity either a civil or criminal action for libel should bo instigated. The bazaar and sale of goods in connection with at. Mark's Church took place at the Assembly Rooms, Carterton, yesterday. Thoro was a very good display of fauoy-noedle work, and other useful articles. The tables wore presided over as follows:—Fancy goods, Mesdames A. Booth G. M. Gardoner, Brann, and Misses Morgan, Goodin, Brann, Carter, and Telford; Sandilands; refreshment stall, Mesdames Price and Carter; and the " bran-pie" •was under tho supervision of Miss Brann. Thore was a very good attendance, and everything wont off in a satisfactory manner. A meeting of tho Carterton Voluntoer Fire Brigade was hold at the engine shed last night. There were 14 meinbors present, and the following were elected officers:—Captain, J. A. Dudson; lieutenant, It. Butler; foreman, W, W. Rising; brauchman No, 1, F. Tyler; branchman No. 2, G. Hughes; J. Crawley, engine tender and cleaner; W. J. Lindop, Secretary and Treasurer. With such a staff of able officers, tho Brigade will, no doubt, bo a success, and in case of fire acquit themselves creditably, as they havo done in the past.
