CORRESPONDENCE.
('i'O THE EdIIOU.)
Slit, —1 seo in to-day's Daily an article headed " Scab in tlio Whareama," in which Mi' Jiayloy is reported to have stated that tho outbreak of scab is confined to a paddock of GOO or 700 sheep, 1 sincerely hope such is tho case for Mr Livertou's sake, If it is correct that Mr Bayleymade a statement "that it is possible that tho present outbreak was spontaneous, as tho disease seems to be in an elementary stage," it-is a deliberate attempt mi his part to blind Government, and mislead tho public as to tho danger that had existed for years in that part of tho country, and which the utmost efforts of two such energotic men as Inspector Drummoiid and Mr Liverton have failed as yet to romovo, The' expressions "spontaneous outbreak," "elementary stage" seems too much liko what you might expect to hear from a man lacking practical knowledge of his work to come from thi! Head yf tho Sheep Department, as his real opinion respecting such an outbreak as the present. I have known different sheep owners test tho length of time it would take after clean sheep were placed with scabby sheep • before the young insects were visible. Jt has ' been proved that in tho majority of cases eight days was the time, i have also proved it myself. JNearly two years ago Mr Liver'o.i sent in an application to Government for payment (agreed upon between. Government and himself) for destruction of wild sbeep in the bush. Mr Liviston made the application then, believing all the sheep were destroyed. At the same time he also sent an article to the Daily, expressing his readiness to take any person or porsons ovor the ground who doubted the sheep were all destroyed. What could have induced Mr Bayley to make tho statement he is reported to have done when lie must be well aware that the bush country has not been free of wild sheep for many years. I am, &c„ Thos. -W. Telford,
