It has happened, saya Disraeli, that inquisitivo .men examining with a flambeau ancient sepulchres which liavo just been opened, the fat and gross vapors ongendered by tho corruption of (load bodies kindlod as tho flambeau approached tliem, to the great astonishment of the spectators, who frequently cried out "a miracle" This sudden inflammation, although very natural, has given room for tho belief that perpetual lamps wore placed in the tombs of tho ancients, Referring to tho transfer of Mr Yon Stunner, R.M., from tho Hokianga district to the Wairarapa, tho Hokianga correspondent of the now Zealand Herald speaks of that gentleman'B departure as being in many respects an irreparable loss, and adds:—" For nineteen years ho has been amongst us, discharging his duties faithfully.and diligently, thereby gaining tho CRtocm [and confidence of Europeans and Natives aliko; and while congratulating him upon his well earned promotion, wo generally regret his removal from Hokianga, Not nlono do wo regrot tho departure of Mr Von Stunner, but the departure of Mrs Von Sturmor will bo keenly felt, especially by thoso of us who know her amiable and kindly qualities. Mastorton's gain is our loss.

Our Pahiaiua correspondent writes : The weather hero is abominable, with rain nearly overy day, and as cold as winter, in fact wo have had no spring weather yet except two or throo quite by accident. Food is still scarce, and tho lung worm is vory busy among tho shocp, A lot of damage has been done to tho roads of late especially on tho township reserve road in tho villago settlement which was originally mado by the County, a small culvert having boon put in whero it required a bridge. A bridge will havo to bo built now as tho culvert has boon washed away togothor with about twelve feet of the formation. The proper timo to see road lines is when the country is in flocd. Tho idea of putting in a culvert in some places seoms ridiculous in fine weather, but when the rain comes the same place may require a bridge, as in this case. The same thing applies to laying off a railway, for after goiug to the trouble to find a route across the other side of tho Mungatainoke river the late floods have left their mark abovo tho proposed line for miles, in some cases from 8 to 10 feot, especially when a good line already exists along tho main road which could bo mado for from two to three thousands per mile less.
