There was a rumor current in Timaru yesterday that a dead cat would play a somewhat prominent- part iu the HallHouston attempted murder caw, It appears that the nurse gavo the cat the remains' of one of Mrs Hull's meals. The cat was shortly afterwards found dead, and it has since been surmised that it died from the effects of poison, It is rumored that it is intended to exhume tlio eat and analyse the remains, but nothing authentic can be gleaned on the subject.
Auckland, October 9. William lleid, charged with indecent assault on a child a»ed 11, was acquitted by directions of Mr Justico Ward, owing to tho child not understanding the nature of an oath. Christian Johnson, found guilty of indecent assault upon his own daughter, was sentenced to five years and two floggings, of 25 lashes each.
