"H.A." hailing from Mastorton, writos A to tho editor of tho Otago Witness, under date Septombor Ist, 188 li, irom which I clip the following with reference to tho price of shearing in this Island h-" A 'rumor haa reached here that ono or two squattm-a are endeavoring to reduce tho price of shearing to 15s per hundred, and rely on tho Soutliorn men to further thqm in their efforts, Tho sheop hore are mostly heavy longwools and are vory dirty with dags. There is also nioro time lost through wet weather, and, lastly, nil the iniin here intend to stand for the old price, 1 viz., £1 per hundred, which thoy will easily get unless tho Southerners under"lino us," I must inform that--' it was the North Island men who were the first to reduco the price of shearing from£l to 17s (id,... The shoarora who sheared at Blairlogio last year wero mostly North:l#laiid men. They could- A have obtained tho £1 per hundred, but preforrod the 17s Cd and have the slioop dagged for thorn. I think they abound have taken tho fl and kopfc tho price up. Then they turn around and say !f If the Southerners do not undft* wine ua, we will get tho £l."
