SPORTING.
1 The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Spring , meeting, which has just taken place, may : be said to have sounded the opening noto tor the racing season of 'B6 and 'B7, from the fact of it being the first meeting of i any consequence that has taken place ■ this season, The strides made in the : Napier District in sporting is a matter of ; great surprise, as mooting aftor mooting i havo followed each other in rapid succesi sion. The town and Suburban gathering was followed by the Napier Park Races at which £BSO were jivon in stakos, and this being its inaugural meeting; sounds well for its future success. Thore were about four thousand persons present and the good round sum of £3194 was put through the totalisator during the day. Mr P. F. Tancred's horses Administrator, Normanby, and Forester were engaged at this meeting but beyond Normanby being placed in the Grand Stand Handicap, the team was not seen at the finishes. The Hawkes Bay Jockey Club gave £570 on the first day and £585 on the second, and during the two days the totalisator w»b patronised to the extent of £B2ll Besides Mr Tancred's team mentioned, the Wairarapa was further represented by Mr T. H. Hill's Pasha and Tornado, but as ten out of tho twolvo ovonts were won by Hawkes Bay Horses, and one by a Christchurch horse, tho Buccess of our representatives can bo guaged, On the first day Pasha was second for the Free Handicap, which was won by Waitiri, and third for the Flying, Loudan and Rivulet being in front of tho son of Mute at the finish, the time, lmin 18£seoB, being a good criterion of the pace of these flyers. Mr Tancred's chestnut colt Forester appropriated the Hawkes Bay Guineas, a stake worth £340, and so littlo was he thought of at the start that the totalisator paid a dividend of £7O onhiin. This annual event since 1880 has been successively won by Rewi, Hippodamia, Kingask, Escopeta, Pearl, Waitiri and Forester. The latter's time was lmin ill sec, Waitiri's being tho fastest, two seconds less, the Pearls being thelongosfc, lmins3|Becs. In the Selling Bace Normanby got second place after a good struggle with Deceiver in the straight. On tho second day Forester was unplaced for the Maiden Plate, tho event of the meeting, Normanby and Administrator, our only representatives, ran fourth and seveuth respectively, Silence, the winner of tho big event at the Park Meeting being winner. Since 'BO the the winners of this Handicap have been Piscatorious, Badsworth, Mavis, Leonata, Tigridia and Silence. Pasha put in tho fastest time when he won last season in 2min 41Jsecs., Leonata time beinglongest, 2min 45sec's. In the Sourry Stakes, Normanby got Becond to The Arrow, and in the Consolation Pasha carrying top weight, 9st 81b, got third place, Tornado, Cst 41b, being fourth, the winner turning up in Marion, Bst 31b, ridden by the rodoubtablo " Derrett." Tho performance of our cracks were certainly not up to the expectations of our sports, .and the effect it will have in the betting on the Now Zealand Oup, for which both Pasha and Administrator have stood well remains to be seen.
