FOOTBALL NOTES.
[By Touuhunk.] As the season of 'B6 has been brought to a close, a retrospect of tho play in the Wairarapa, will show whether the district has made any advancement in this particular Bport, or otherwise. In Football history, this season will be marked as the most important in the Wairarapa, as' several events havo happened that will always bo referred to as landmarks, the chief of which are—tho formation of the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union, the defeat of the Wellington Union by its off-shoot., and the visit of the New South Wales team to the district, It has been said thai) the Union has been tho means of retarding the progress of Football, and thiii, to a certain degree, is quito correct, but like everything else it requires to got into working order, and perhaps next reason the shortcomings of this will be experience for the delegates to work upon. Ju the first place the Union should have charge of the Senior matches, It was intended at the commencement of the soason to hold a series of senior contests, but the quostion was shelved, and, consequently, each club was allowed to arrange matchbs as best they could, with the result that Masterton and Greytown met twice, arid Carterton and Groytown three times during the season. Had tho Unioa taken upon itself the task of bringing the different clubs together, we should not have had Carterton playing Greytown three times, and nut meeting Masterton once. With this fact staring them in the face the next season's dolegates will do well to take the arrangement ii» hand, snd fix the dates and places of all matches. Another reason why they should insist, on this rule is, that being Union matches tho names of contesting teams would bo forwarded to the Secretary. The match committee would thus havo a guide to picking representative teams, and it would alsu be useful in determining who aro first and second fifteen players. The Junior Cup offered by the Uuion brought out live teams, Groytown, Carterton and To Ore Ore nominating one each, and Masterton two. The first to meet woro Cartoitou and To Ore Ore, when the latter completely walked through their opponents, sconn? nineteon points to nil. Greytown and Masterton No. 1 team noxt met, tho latter winning after a good Btrugglo by two points to nil. Masterton No. 2 team withdrew from the contest, leaving Te Ore Ore to fight it out with No. 1 team. This resultod in a win for No. 1 by seven points to nil, The victors claim possession of the cup until next Beason, whon, if chey again win, it becomes their absolute property. There have boon three Union matches played during the season, two against Wellington and ono against Now South Wales, The Wairarapa Union sent its first team to Wtliington, which camo backboatonby six points to nil, The return match was played in the Wairarapa (Greytown) when the verdict was roverssd, aud Wellington was sent home beaten by four points to two. The New South Wales match proved rather disastrous to our players, to which must bo attributed our defeat. The licking, under thecircumatauces, can be classed a victory when the score is taken into consideration, viz,, six points to five. Taken as a wholo the Union has got throuuh its initiative season very creditably, and with the matorial in hand will be able to place a team in the field next season that will give the Otago travellers all their work to score against if they can be induced to visit the Wairarapa during their trip. The Masterton Club s first team have played four matches this Beason, two against Greytown, ono againßt the Wellington Club, and one against To Ore Oro. In tho first match with Greytown, Masterton Buffered a defeat by two goals to nil. In the return match things were reversed, and Greytown was licked by a try to nil. The Wellington toam beat our local nion by a goal to a try, and Te Ore Ore were beaten by ono goal two tries to a try. The Mnßterton second team were more successful, having scored four wins in six matches, the other two being drawn. The wins were Rivals (first), coal and try to nil j Greytown (second) two goals and three tries to nil; Epuni (first), i<oal and cry to a try; To Ore Ore, goal (pot) three tries to a goal, In a match against the Greytown second no score was made, and against the Str . at) two goals were scored on b ttßß&uXhe Masterton footballers stuu w :l u fivVtice during the season, besioes playing matches among themselves, such as Town v Country, aud Volunteer !"iro Brigade. They rolled up well at tho repress, ative trial praotioes with the result that seven were finally picked to play in tho team against New South Wales Carterton requires lots of pushin? before they will stir. It is not becauso they havo not not the matorial, but they lack the " go" of the other Clubs in the Valley. That they havo "grit" has been proved by the three matchea they havo played this season, in each case the gamos have been drawn with Greytown. This has been looked upon by Boms of the Carterton enthusiasts as sufficient grounds that they should have equally sb many in the representative team as the other sonior Clubs in the Union,' but when the individual play of a team is ..analysed things wear a very different aspect, and it must be admitted that the best man in the'Car-. tertonteam wasi selected, viz.;BaumJtKjiy
and also that the representative team did not suffer through any others (if- the Carterton tenth being Idftout.'. Among the principal matches played by the Greytown Club, wore -three with Carterton (all drawn) two with Masterton (one won and one lost) and a win against the Welling ton Club.. They have kept up their practises well by sending teams to Maryborough and. Matarawa,' and they pasacsa players that would fill a place creditably in either a provincial or Colonial team, They provided the majority of one representative team and the sterling game they played is already football history. Tho Te Ore Ore Club, although not taking its place amoug the seniur teams this season, will, no doubt, elect to place a senior team in the field next year, Their play in the Junior Cup contests, and also in the matches against the Masterton Club shew them to be no mean antagonists, and quite able to cope with tho best of the Union Clubs, Perhaps the most successful club of the season is the Bed Stars (Masterton). They have played twolvo matches win ning seven, drawn three, and lost two. The first team won five out of tho six matches they played and wore only Bcored against once. The following isalist of their contests:—Epuni (first) won by a try to nil, Melrose (first) woo. by a try to : nil, Opaki won by a try to nil, Melrose (first) won by two tries to oue try, Masterton (second) drawn, two goals each. The 6econd fifWon played a drawn matoh with tho Epuni Booond, oach aide scoring a try, thoy also played a draw with the Grcytown Wauderors, no score being mado. They were beaten by the Carterton Rivals by a goal to nil, and beat the Grcytown Wanderers by four trios to nil. Their third toara played two matelieo with the Public Soliool first team, each team scoring a victory, tho Htars.by a try to nil, and the School by a goal to nil. This club has signified its intention of competing for tho Junior Cup of the W.R.F.U., if they'should do so, the team that beats them will have to play for it, for they are the beat practised footballers in the district, and deserve well the success thev have met.'
