MASTERTON TOWN LANDS TRUSTEES.

The regular monthly meeting of tlio Trustees was held in the Institute last night. Present-Messrs E. Feist (Chairman), Chamberlain, Perry, and Muir, The minutes of the previous regular meeting and the special meeting were confirmed. Correspondence :-A letter was read from the Chairman of the Fernridge School Committoe, thanking the Trustees for their grant of £ls. From the Secretary of the Masterton School Committee, thanking the Trustees for a grant in aid of the school, and applying for its share of the funds granted for the picnic. From W, H Buethain, Hon. Manager of the Masterton Fish Hatchery, applying for a grant for improving the grounds. In reference to the picnic fund, the Secretary explained that the fund was for the two ■schools, Fernridge and Masterton. ■ borne discussion took place, the feeling being that the two schools should to some common arrangement for holding a picnic. ■ ■Mr W. Cullon applied to lease part of Town Acre 85.

The Secretary explainod that the part of the section appiied for had been let, and the lease was broken on account nf tlio leasee not having paid his rent, The Secretary was instructed to take possession after obtaining advice from the solicitor to tlio Trust.

It was resolved to invite tenders foi the leaao of the section as soon as pus session w»b resumed.

The letter from Mr W, H, Boetham wis considered,

The Chairman said the question to be decided was whether the Trust had funds to devote for such a purpose. Mr Perry was in favor of a sum being voted in accordance with the application. He thought it well deserving of recognition.

Mr Muir considered tho work done in Mastorton by tho Acclimatisation Society in stocking the Btreams of the Wairarapa of groat value and importance to tho district. He deemed it ut work of public utility, and therefore quite within tho province of tho Trust to contribute to.

The letter was referred to tho Finance Committee,

Tho reply of the Masterton Borough Council in reference to the purchase of part town acre 24 for the purpose of widening Renall Street was laid on tho table.

(Tho letter haß already boon published by us in tho report of tho last mooting nf the Borough Council.) The Chairman said the Council had virtually accepted the offer and tho Trustees would complete the arrangement as soon as the Council was ready, This concluded the business.

Finance Committee, 'lhe Committee met after the ordinary meeting closed, when the following letter was read; Sib.—l have tho honor to bring under the notice of tho Masterton Town Lands Trustees the useful work that is bein« carried on in their district by the Welling" ton and Wairarapa Acclimatization Society, Since the work of utooking the rivers with trout and salmon was commenced,, the following expenditure haß been made in Mastertonlßß3-84, £127 8sId; 1884-85,£449 13s 8d; 1885-8(1, £332 4s7d; liabilities to 31st August, 1886, £BO 14s sd; making a total of £989 15s 9d in direct expenditure. As a result we havo now ono of the finest piscicultural establishments in the Colony, I which we feel convinced will shortly be the central Fish Hatchery in the North Island. From this centre a work will be carried on, the value of which to the district can hardly be over-estimated, Tourists and anglers will be attracted, the value of property enhanced, a wholesome good supply created, and healthy sport encouraged, that will in the future do much to keep the rising generation out of mischief. Some attempt has been made to plant a few trees at the hatchery, and with, but little expenditure the grounds can be made exceedingly attractive and interesting from a scientific and educational point of view, as well as a recreation ground, There is, however, a considerable amount of feeling among the Wellington subscribers to the Acclij matisation Society that Masterton • is reaping a large amount of benefit from tho Society, while the public bodies , there will not assist or in any way .recognise what is being done—not • even to the extent of remitting the rates on the property, I would point out that this feeling will be very much altered and matters made easier for myself as manager of the Masterton Hatchery if the Masterton Lown Lands Trustees will contribute towards improving the grounds, and show

that tK# the valup of the work being drtiie-, A'largo amount of money lias been subscribed by the public, and our Society believes that, any action taken by the Trustees in this direction will- be highly appreciated! 1 have, etc., :• • . ,

William H.Beetham, Honorary Manager of the Fish Hatchery, Wellington and Wairarapa Acclimatisation Society.

It was resolved to recommend to the Trustees that the sum of ten pounds be granted to the.Acclimatisation Society,
