THE BUSH ROAD.

The following letter has just been received by the Clerk of the Wairarapa East County :

Dear Sib,—l notice by the report of the last meeting of the Wairarapa East County Council that the Council has been brought face to face with the difficulties in connection with the maintenance of the Seventy-Mile Bush Road. 1 have repeatedly drawn the Minister's attention to the necessity for assistance being rendered by the .Government to the Council re maintenance of this road, but although Mr W. C. Smith and Mr Buchanan assisted me there to represent the urgency of the case, we have not been successful in obtaining the assistance that should have been given. Immediately on noticing tho report of the meeting, I waited on the Minister and rcquosted him to send an engineer to investigate the presentstate of the road between Mauricevilla and Eketahuna, Mr Richardson at once adopted my suggestion, and Mr Connal will be instructed to meet Mr Bremner to inspect the road, Mr Richardson has also promised that if it can be proved that that the Railway Department is in any way responsible for the present state of the road that ho will meet the Council as far as possible by way of monetary assistance.
