The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1886. THE MAYORALTY.
Now that the * annual moult of the Borough Council is over and the municipality is again in full feather, the question of themayoralty for the coming year is likely to occupy the attention of the burgesses, Mr Canolberg has announced to the public that he will not be a candidate for re-elec-tion when his present term of office expires, and this declaration will no doubt have tho effect of encouraging others who take an interest in borough politics to come to the front. The growing importance of the town demands that a really good man should follow Mr Caselberg, and we scarcely believe, that the burgcßues will be satisfied with anyone who is not thoroughly competent to preside at the Council table, and to discharge efficiently the tnauy important functions appertaining to the office. We have some confidence in one or more satisfactory candidates coining forward, aa the position of Mayor of Maßtertou is a distinguished oue, and probably in time it will be regarded by public men as a sort of stepping stone to the House of Representatives, At the last general election an ex-councillor of 1 the borough nearly scored a victory, and possibly lwd-he been a successful ex-mayor he would have been placed. When Mr Caselberg stated in our columns that he did not intpnd to come forward in November next he promised to convene a meeting of tho burgesses and give them an accouut of his two years' stewardship, We trust he will redeem this pledge at an early date, because the meeting which he proposes to hold might lead up to the selection of a suitable successor ii he still adheres to his determination to retire for a while from the horse shoo table. For some time punt there has been scarcely a ripple on the surface of borough politics, hut we believe tbafc there is material now available for.'a ■, full and free discussion, and that Mr Ousel-
berg's meeting when it iscomm-d will be mi animatod one, BwgPNws are even now talking over the gaa arrangements, the V7i'i|ioua difficulty, tbelnstitate l und" other matters of general interest, It is rumored that in introducing' gas' to the town the original estimate of cost will be exceeded by a thousand pounds or so, and no doubt many ratepayers will ask for information on this head. For our own pant we shall regard the gas enterprise as fairly successful if we get a good light, and the margin for extras does not exceed a thousand pounds. We only refer to this point now in order to illustrate our contou • (ion that a meeting of burgesses at the present time is likely to prove interesting to the public. Yery many persons desire to know how things are going ou, and who is to take up the work in November next, aud if Mr Caselberg will call his meeting at an ea.ily date, we can assure, him that it will be well attended, aud will be regarded as opportune by very many of the ratepayers.
