The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1886. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

The municiptil election yesterday created a good deal of interest in the selection of tho caudidates who came forward, but little or none in borough politics, There was no ambitious orator among those who .sought civic honors, and we are contented that such should be the case, as we have found by experience in Masterton that workers rather than talk-era ire our best friends at the Council table. As we anticipated, Messrs Chamberlain, Elkins, and Parous were returned, but not quite in tho order we predicted, Mr Hessey made a gallant fight to retain his old seat, and the numerous votes he polled' cover his retreat from the contest with honor. I At elections of this kind a considerable number of persons make a point of voting for new blood. It was doubtless this element in the contest that placed Mr Elkins before Mr Chamberlain and which turned the scale against.Mr Hessey. We have never had a more friendly contest in the town, and the result will be generally accepted with good feeling. The Kuripuni candidate represented with his 104 votes'the prevalent Kuripuni discontent. Wo beliove that justice should be done to the southern portion of the town, and the residents there had an excellent opportunity of making capital out of the late contest. Unfortunately, they made an error in judgment by throwing away their votes on a candidate who was not likely',to be acceptable in other portions of the Borough, and so they have lost, rather than gained, ground by the late election. The successful candidates are all likely to prove useful members. Messrs Chamberlain and Parsons have already made reputations for themsolveß by diligently attending to the various public duties j which they have undertaken. Mr Elkins, tho popular favorite, no doubt I feels the responsibility of tho honorable position he has won, and. will not disappoint tho favorable expectatiou of his capabilities as a public man which his friends have formed.
