The new Salvation Army Barracks in Markot-square, which cost £ISOO, and will seat 18U0 persons, was opened to-day by Commissioner Howard, from Australia. About 400 Salvationists from other parts of tho Colony, bosidos the local corps were present, arid large crowds of tho public. The streets around tho building wore densely thronged, but no disturbance occurred. Inveroaroiu, September 5, Captain Ellcs, Collector of Customs from the settlement of Southland till a few years ago, when ho retired on a pension, died this morning. He was captain of one of the pioneer ships to Otago.

.In aHßwer to a telegram asking if Government can give passages per .Hinomoa to a hundred men in addition to tho Southland prospecting party, the Mayor, as Chairman of the Association, recoived the following from the Mimater of Mines;—"Tho Hinomoa can take up 250 prospectors. They will all have to.bring their own bedding. If any magnanimous individual desires to send a few shoep with'the party the steamer can take them, also three or four pack horses if necessary: 1 am sending a qualified surveyor with tho .party, who will lay off tracks inland from tho coast, so that road making may proceed con currently with prospecting. The one will help the other.—W. J. M. Larnaoh" Tho Hinomoa sails from Ihe Bluff on the 18th'inst.
