WAIRARAPA GOSPEL TEMPERANCE UNION.
Ths weekly meeting of the Wairarapa Gospel Temperance Union was'held in tho Wesleyan Chapel last night. The attendance was good. The Rev. J. N. Buttle opened the proceedings in the usual form.
Mr W. Alexande* occupied the ohair, and his opening remarks were of a very encouraging nature. He pointed out the basin of tho Union, the gospel, was the only foundation of a permanency. ', Mr Ensthopo'a addresa wai principally 1 to enlist tho aid of the ladies k the great work. He gave as.a reason that they were the greatest sufferers from the drinking custom. His address was humorous, but full of- good sound logic on the subject. ~ The Rev. D, Fulton; spoke upon the toasting customs at banquets. He traced their origin during tho reW of Charles 11, what these customs-had let to he graphically portrayed the dire results thereof. This led him on to'speak of ■those who were under the power of drink and the benefit of the Institution of the Gospel Temperance Union ,a».» remedy for the evil, The reverend wntleman was downright eloquent on hJAtheme and
