MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held yesterday. Present-Messrs Boddington (chairman), Hogg, Leahy, and Payton, The minutes of the preoeding meeting having been read and confirmed, the treasurer reported a credit balance of £34 3s 4d.

Correspondence was read from the Education Board declining to re-open the question of a second school; from J. M.. Beechey enclosing a conditional resignation ; from tho Board re promotion'of Mr Beechey to Dalefield school. Mr Payton expressed his dissatisfaction that tho Board declined to clear up tho misunderstanding that existed with respect to the second school, and moved, " That the. Committee regretted the unjust and evasive refusal of the Board to discuss a question of vital importance to a large number of children in Masterton."

Mr Hogg seconded the resolution and

said he considered the action of thelßoard to be shuffling and discreditable.: It was onlyafter repeated applications that they, had obtained the present evasive answer. Children oyer, seven years of age were' now beinff neglected in-the northern end of the town, they were too young to send to the main school and they could.not'be. received at the second sohooi. He considered -that Wairara'pa North; was placed at a disadvantage on thoßoard, as it-had only one representative there: _ The Chairman said he was under the impression that they hud five representatives on the Board. He was of the opinion that the Board was not pledged to provide a site for a Becond school, and he desired to protest against the resolution tabled. As the meeting was a small one, he would like the discussion postponed, He.Batd Mr Lowes took the. same view that he did.

Mr Leahy objected to the postponement for the sake of Mr Lowes, as' they had altered the night of meeting to suit' his convenience. The resolution was then carried, the >. Chairman entering a protest against it. ltwss thon resolved that the Board representatives' of the Wpirarapa district be invited' to' meet the Committee oh the side school question. The question re transfor of Mr Beechy was referred to the-Chairman and visiting member, as no information was before the meeting as to when a successor to Mr ; Beechy was likely to be appointed. The attendances for the past month were reported as follows : Main Side School Sohooi Number on roll 532 104 Average attendance 403 73 Miss Keeling reported that Mr Leo had visited the side sohooi on Tuesday, and expressed himself satisfied with the general arrangements ind progress of childron.

The following accounts were passed-for payment :—Bradford, 15s Gd; A.'P. Glasse, £llßs 6d; H..J. Jones, £2 8s; Mrs Ransome £2 4s 6d; Mrs Woodham, £l;F.M.Wood£l. . A report from sub-Committee was read recommending a school picnic at Mauriceville on the Prince of Wales Birthday, expenses of Bame to be defrayed by tho special fund held by the Town Lands Trust for thin purpose, the surplus proceeds to be applied to the purchase of school prizes. The report was adopted, the Town Lands Trust being asked to make the annual graut, to be expended as follows:—Gymnastic appliances, £2O; repairs to school grounds £2O, and School prizes £lO. It was also resolved to authorise a sub-Committee, in anticipation of a grant from the Trust, to at onco pat the school play ground in order, as the_ present was a favorable season for rolling the gravel, etc. MrMuirwas appointed visiting member for the ensuing month, The meeting then adjourned,
