Chkistohurch, August 18. At 3.15 p.m. to-day there are no signs of the Wanaka, which left Dunedin at 3 p.m. on Monday. Lathe, At 9 p.m. there was no sign of the Wanaka which loft Dunedin at3p.ni., on Monday. Yesterday . afternoon the weather was bo thick at Lyttelton Heads that the sea waß not visible from the pilot station. As {ho Wanaka'must have had a heavy Bea and North East wind against her with a lee Bhore, she has probably stood out te sea waiting for the weathor to clear. Captain Kennedy of the steamer Hauroto, which arrived from Wellington this morning states that a tremendous sea is running on the coaßt.
Auckland, this day/ The intelligence officer of the Amorican warship Mohican forwards the following in compliance with instructions from Admiral MeCauley. The American corvette Mohican, Commander Day, made a special trip to an island formed by volcanic action since October last. At a distance of 15 miles steam could be plainly discerned rising in the air. above the former site of the Falcon Shoal. On arriving at the spot, the Mohican steamed round taking the bearings of its positions and sketches and' photographs of its contour and appearance. The island iB of circular shape, 230 ft high, and a mile and a half wido. -It has a steaming crater on the east side. To the extremo weßt there is noticeable a wroath of smoke. On taking tho soundings, good anchorage was found on the north side of the islands. The longitude is 175° 20" west, and latitude 20° 20" south. The island is situated 48 milas N.N. W, of Nokalofa, The impression conveyed by its appearance was that a bed of the ocean had been uplifted out of the water.
