SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE COLONIES.
Mr A J. Wilson writes to a Loudon evening paper regarding the examination of colonial youths in the colonies for open scholarships at the English Universities. As bba rule stands at "present a boy has to leave his home and'perform a journey ■ of long duratioiij.before he oan even compete. Ue may fail, and be obliged to. return, having wasted nearly half a year, or to stay in England as.au unassisted student. Tbis limits the competition to the sons of wealthy people, and is hardly fair on others, Mr Wilson states that at first view there may appear a difficulty in examining boys in the colonies for open scholarships in England, but be submits that the difficulty is not insurmountable. Let the College authorities print the papers, my. three montim in advuuee, aud transmit them to a Committee in the colony, Ibis Committee would be responsible for fairness inoompetitious, and the papers could be relumed so as to teach the .University authorities about the same time as the home candidates finish their papers. This principle is already carried out in local examinations and in many held nnder the Civil Service Commission. The proposed cbauge would be very advantageous. It would enlarge the field o> candidates for open scholarships, and raisa the classical and mathematical slandord in the colonies.
