We call attention to a now advertisement of Mr F. H, Wood, which appears on our third page and refers to sundry articles he has at 'his Masterton rooms for sale. . The eight Natives charged at Mauaia with pig stealing were brought up yesterday. As it appeared from the evidence that seven of them were acting under the directions of the eighth, thoy were discharged with a warning, and the ringlender was sentenced to three months hard labor. The White Hart Hotel has changed hands. Mrs E. H. Buokeridge is th# new proprietress, and takes possession today, having purchased Mr Bishop's interest in the house. A Reuters telegram received this morning states that it is believed that Lord Churchill will take office in the new Miii.istry as Chancellor of the Exchequer ana ict as leader of tho Conservative party in the House of Commons. The rising township of Eketahuna is making rapid, strides of late. The new police station has just been completed, which is a, neat building consisting of two rooms, lock-up and woodshed, enclosed by a neat paling fence.- The addition' to the public school will be out of the contractors hands in about a week, the new wing was much required and. is quite an ornament to the township. Mr J. Jones, of the Temperance Hotel, has added ten mora rooms to his establishment, together with a hot and cold bath room. He has spared no exponse for the benefit of the travelling public. . Something ought to be dono to prevent the youths of Mastorton from annoying visitors to the Theatre, and damaging the. property there. During the late visit of Matthew Burnett they had free access to all parti of the house, and the consequence was they broke windows, cut chairs, tore curtains, and did other damage. It would be better to arrange for a constable to be specially employed on occasions of this sort, and then the' wholesome dread of the law might instil a respect for property into the minds of the lads.
The Borough Council has ce-appointed Mrs Reilly from among thirty applicants aa custodian to the Institute. Wb do not know the merits of the other candidates, but it was expected the choice would fall on Mrs Reilly, as formany years past, her courtesy to all visitors to the Instituto has made her many friends, and the care and attention paid to her duties in the past'is a sufficient guarantee for the future. A telegram from Ohristchurch received this morniug states that a sailor from the ship Oainaru fell into tho harbor while drunk last night. He would have been drowned but for Mr McDonnell, the steward of the steamer Akaroa, who jumped in and rescued- him. This is the second time Mr McUonnell has rescued life at the risk of his own.
