Alfredton Riding. -Eketahuna to Tinui road.-The progress on cdhtraot jfo. has been of anything biifc a ■.satisfactory character during the past mouth. The latter portion of the work has" been most the contractor has left the districb, leaving an order, with Mr James Tonne;;, to' receive the.balancei of the! contract; njoney. Arrangementsjiiave been entered into for executing w> necessary repairs to the Tirajiwea rifer fords, by day labor, and' the- work is now uader way, and will be completed in the course of a fortnight, •The' roads' generally in this riding are,' 'I nptwitnstandiv<» the severe teste to which jthey hsW' 'ately been subjected, iu'hmch betfljp order for the season of the year, than has been the case in former years. Thia is in a great measure due to the bene6ts they are deriving from the expenditure upon them during the past year. This im. proyement ib more particularly appreciable upon the Eketahuua to Alfredton section where bush clearing and metalling ' works have worked great changes for the better, in the condition of, the surface of the road.
Cajtlopoint Riding.-Masterton to Waimata road.—The damage sustained by the Tinui bridge. by the floods two months asm, was repaired and the.bridee re-oponed for traffic about i fortnight since, 1 fear that the altered conditions of the banks of the river will necessitate such extensive additions to the present structure as to render it extremely doubtful if a new bridge will not ultimately prove theoheaperway of iggling with the matter. The present britp is in many respects defeotive, and by working up the best of the material into a new bridge, and removing the; obstructions which the present piers offer, to the course of the river, the banks will be less liabje to the corrosive action of the current wpen the river is in flood. .1.wi11,. howWer, l>« prepared, later un, after more careful investigations, to lay before the Couiicil reliable particulars with respect to both proposals. Tho contract for building the bridge and forming its approaches at Oahanga has been satisfactorily completed and.tho line of road to the landing ihed, at present blocked by land slips will be open for dray traffic by next wool season. The road repairs at MaWkona and Akiteo are now being proceeded with and will be out of hand by the 20th of th« current month.,;
Opaki to Manawatu .JtoatWTho heavy traffic occasioned by tha.carting of railway slwpera on narrow tire waggons and ' brakes, together with the effects of the ' recent severe frost«,,has considerably cut about many sections' of this line.
