(United Press Association.) Port Chalmers, this day. A laboring man named Charles Brane was swept off the breakwater works at Otago heads on Saturday afternoon into 18ft of water. The tide was flowing, and the man rose once. He failed to catch either the pieces of timber or buoys thrown to him and perished. He leaveß a wife and family in Dunedin. Christohubch, this day.. Robert Wilkin, head of the firm of Wilkin & Co., died this morning. He •was 66 years of age, formerly President of- the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. -He was a prominent breeder of stock. .Auckland,. This-day.-Great excitement has been caused here by the receipt of the news that a dreadful murder has been committed at :Tryphena Harbor, Gre&t Barrier Island, dn - Saturday morning last, by which a settler named Robert Taylor was shot dead by John Caffery, master, ail'd "Herijj?" Penri,.' mate, of the Cutter Sovereign of the Seas. Caffeiy, who is an old trader to the Barrier, paid his addresses-to • Miss Jane Taylor, about four ' years ago,but her father (the murdered man) refused to give his consent to their marriage. The breaking-off of-the match seemed to rankle in Caflrey's breast, though he has not been heard to express any ill feeling against .the family during his stay in town. After the last' trip he ! gave way to drink, and was intoxicated before leaving last Thursday nighty -.The J police are arranging to go with a steamer to capture the murderers, who cleared out in the cutter. They are still cruißing about the Great: Barrier. Both men are well armed, though one revolver was left at the scene of the murder.
