THE KIMBERLEY GOLFIELD.
Sir Robert Stout has received the following message by cable from HrM. S. Smith, Acting Colonial Secretary for Western Australia. The messago is dated Perth May 81. The following is communicated by direction of the Governor, Sir Frederick Broome for the information of the GovernmentGoldfield has been proclaimed in the Kimberly district, Every Toason to believe it will be extensive. • About 2000 ounces of gold already obtained. Mount Barratt is about, the centre of the field. The distance from Derby ia about three hundred and fifty miles; the former is at present the better route. There are indications of gold one hundred aud fifty miles from Derby. Drays can travel without great difficulty for about three hundred miles, then pack-horses have to be used for the remainder of distance S'J far as gathered there are not a large number of miners at the diggings at present, but more than one thousand men are stated to be on their way thore, . It is most essential, to avoid hardship and that parties proposing to go to the diggings should be well equipped with drays and lwrses. Wo are awaiting report of Police party that left Derby for yoldfielda on the 10th inst. A Warden has been appointed. He proceeds shortly with an escort to the goldfield. Various works are being undertaken in Derby to facilitate the passage of vessels to Port Derby and the landing and storing of goods. The passage from the Point of Port Derby is being properly buoyed, the jetty added to, a tramway constructed from the jetty to the town of Derby, and a large bonded store constrected. An engineer lias been sent to Derby to superintend these works and to expedite matters. Additional force of workmen is being despatched thero. The town site of Wyndam at Cambridge Gulf has been selected, the harbor thero is excellent, a Government resident and police party are established at Wyndhum, and a survey is also at work in the district. At present, from what we can learn, it would be easier for all parties to go to Derby. Please publish this information."
