Last session the Canterbury leech was at the throat of the colony, but has now relaxed its grip, having got on to a good aide vein, after a futile attempt to fasten on the jugular, Nov we bear that the Auckland and Otago parties are holding caucus gatherings to arrange for the Auckland and Otago leeches being appliod this session to our sick country, We are not surprised to find Otago following the example of Canterbury, but it is somewhat unreasonable for Auckland to go in for log rolling. Four-fifths of that portion of the new loan which is allotted to the North Island is ear marked for Auckland, and yet the Auckland lceoh is dissatisfied. These provincial combinations are a standing menace to the colony. Good govornment is impossible if every provincial leech is to take its turn at the throat of New Zealand and hang on till it is gorged. A strong Ministry could no doubt resist attacks from enemies of this character, but hardly the present Cabinet, Was not the Colonial Treasurer the man who applied the Canterbury leech to the throat of the colony, and how can he be expected to defend New Zealand from blood suckers 1 Have politios in this colony at last come to be a game of grab between big provincial districts] We hear nothing now of meetings of Ministerial supporters and caucusses of Opposition members, These sort of things seem to have passed away, and in place of them there are Auckland, Canterbury, and Otago gatherings,
