A NEW INDUSTRY.
Tpe promises lately occupied by Messrs Harvey and Sons, tanners and fellmongers. on the banks of the Waipoua have been purchased by Mr J. Wilson, who has _ enlarged and fitted them up as a boiling down und scouring works, Mr Wilson was for many years connected with Mr A. Tycr's establishment at Tauherinikau. and consequently enters into business here with considerable experience, He has added an entirely new plant for carrying on the industry from Messrs Robertson and Co,, of tho Phoenix Foundry, Wellington. A larpe steam digester capable of holding between two hundred and fifty to three" hundred carcasos of mutton is supplied by steam from a multitubular boiler with a standing steam pressure of about forty pounds. The cooler,, which receives the tallow from the top of the digester by moans of an elevated pipe, is a large shallow iron tank, To this is fitted both steam and water pipes for tho clarification of tho tallow. At present the water supply is obtained by manual labour, with hand pumps, but Mr Wilson is about to add a steam pump capable of throwing 2,000 gallons per hour to the four largo elevated tanks erected above the building, During the present week twelve hundred Bheep have been slaughtered and boiled down on tho premises, and Btock owners of tho district will be able to arrange with Mr Wilson for the boiling down of thoir surplus sheop as tho establishment is now in good working order. of the industry haa been added, by the energetic proprietor, who is evidently capable of carrying on this business in all its branches, which tori* braces, besides the boiling down, wool scouring, and the manufacture of.
