The public gallery contained a good number, the others only a sprinkling. There were about eighty members in their seats. Tho Hon. Treasurer was received with applause when ho began his speech, ■■ Mr.Fitzherbert, in asking a question ro the Fencing Act yesterday, said the law at present allowed wires in fences to be put close together at the top or bottom, and, strange as it might seem, certain people in the Wairarapa district who had lands adjoining cattle runs had done this, and their sheep thus easily got through into their neighbors' lands.
..An inquest was held on the body of Pihuru Waterhouse, who died on Sunday from the effects of bunting, Th» jury consisted of threo European's and three Natives, Dr Spvatfc being coroner. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that deceascd'had a fit and fell into the fire, by which he was burnt so severely that death ensued.
The reason given by Sir Julius Vogel for the sudden' announcement ot the Financial Statement was that a long delay in fixing the date for its delivery involved a certain amount of commercial disorganisation. Importers cleared large stocks at considerable outlay to themselves and loss.to the revenue.- Honourable members, therefore, he concluded, would not be surprised, after the state.ment, to hear that'he should bring downthe budget that night, it waß generally understood that the statement wm not to havo been delivered till Friday.
Messrs Lowes mid loriiß add to their Bale for June 2nd, 150 good owes. ' Tho sum of £125,000 is on the estimates for the Mauriccvillo Woodville, Railway extention. . The Treasurer's stutement whioh was received in Masterton last night consisted of 10,000 words, and was transferred to writing by Mr 6. M. Park in Icbs than five hours. We give our readers in another column tho salient points. ; A cablegram received this morning flays that tlin Marriage with Deceased. Wife's Sister Bill came on for discussion in the House of Lords on Monday night, when a division was taken, and the measure rejected by a majority of twenty-two. In our report of the football entertainment which was held on Monday evening, we omitted to mention that Miss Corbott played the pianoforte accompaniments during the evening. It is only fair to the young lady to state that the success of the entertainment was in a great measure due to the manner in which she presided at the pianoforte, both in the vocal and orchestra selections.
Messrs Chas. Pownall & Co., Scriveners and Mortgage Agents, Wellington, report:—The stagnation in the money market still continues, and business confined to the narrowest limits. Town securities are moro sought aftor, and Scandinavian settlements, from tho good reputation they have acquired, we readily place at from 7to per cent, Wool, now quoted at less value than has been known for many, years, chocks for the present, speculation in land, or advances of either local or foreign or local capital. There can be no doubt that this extreme depression has occurred at a period very detrimental to this country, when negotiations w«re being entered into, aiid would have been carried out for large advances of English capital, which for the present, are completely shelved. Money continues in-ample supply for the small demand existing. : Miss Ada Campbell's postponed lecture " Evil in the light of science; its cause and cure," was delivered in the Theatre Roval last Sunday evening, there being a good attendance. Miss Campbell's version of the origin of evil was very striking, and showed a great amount of research and original thought, also a thorough acquaintance with the subject, The drink question and the social evil were weir and exhaustively discussed. Miss Campbell declared that parental reform and self-control were the remedies. for those evils. "In self-control," said the lecturess, "we have the soul of moral sense; self-control iB the greatest, the .noblest of all.gospels for struggling .erring, humanity," A vivid and intensely.pathetic picture was drawn of social evil ;as embodied in the unfortunate priestess of .all that is evil in humanity who doomed to.scorn, wretchedness/and an early death appears in all ages a perpetual symbol of ■woman's degradation, and man's sinfulness. ■'' This and a quotation from Macanlays ''Lays of Ancient Rome", were given with fine, histrionic ability. Miss ..Campbell by request will deliver another ■lecturo in'Masterton. next Sunday, the subject will be "Freethought v Christianity, Which has done the mostf'good for tho.:human race?" 'This Miss .■.Campbell's last lecture in Masterton.
