Mr Boetharn asked the Minister for Lands if the Government received any report on the question of the existence of an available road line between Pahlatua and Fitzherbert. Mr Ballance aaid that with the exception of about a mile on the top of the Tararua ranges, west of the saddle, the line had been laid out in sections from time to time as the Burveys of land for settlement wore made. The height of tho saddle had not yet been ascertainedaccurately, but would probably be about 1250 feet. It was intended to have tho line surveyed through the forest reßerve at an early date. There was only, a short distance to be surveyed, and that could be done with the present staff.

The Mayor, in proposing the toast of the day remarked that the men vilified in Rusdon't book were just thoße who had faithfully served thoir country, and in many casos had been honoured by the Queen'for it. Evoryono therefore would be gl»d if they should find the name of Mr Bryce in tho -forthcoming list of birthday honors, Mr Bryce, on rising, was received with continued applause. He said the welcomo prepared for him on his return was a surprise, and ho alluded to the presenco of the ladies as appropriate when tho honor of public men was concerned. He paid a graceful eomplinwnt to members and political opponents for their presonco. He had been advised from the first that his caso was good, and tke only foar he had was the projudico in some quarters against colonists on account of the alleged bad treatment of the aborigines, Ho urged that all historjr showed iio Instance where the subject race was so well treated as in New Zealand... They had equal representation! We reserves, and plenty of other land, most of which paid no taxes. He had relied on the justice of an English judge and jury, and it had not failed him. Ho desired distinctly to avow his belief that Dr Feathorstone never made the assertions against him whioh were alleged to have been uttered in conversation eighteen years ago by a man whose defective memory must be a curse to him, :Tho.. doctor, if ho had anything to say, would hays said it openly to his face, In .conclusion, it was evident, from the welcome he had received, that the fame of its public men was dear to the colony.
