The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1886. TWO IRELANDS.
■WHEN>:Mr'.Gladstone .first promulgated his wprdposals. for : the. : pacification ■ of Ireland,, there was almost a superstitious belief in his power to carry them, notwithstanding, their., revolutionary, character, j He has displayed in the past such.a consummate knowledge of ■Parliamentary tactics,, that .'he has bocomo; through the spoil he. exeicises over the House of Commons, as well as ;hy his power to sway the people, almost an irresistible, force in Great Britain. There can, howover, be no qtiestion but that he will sustain a defeat more or lesß severe on his Irish policy, the only chance be has now left being to reconstruct his scheme. The chief difficulty in Mr Gladstone's way at this juncture Appears to be Mr Chamberlain. It is true that Mr Chamberlain haa only a srtiull following in the House, but his little party would be sufficiently numerous to turn the scale in Mr Gladstone's favor, hence the pressure that has been brought to bear to secure his support. Mr Chamberlain is, however, when his mind is onco mado up, as immovable as an Egyptian pyramid, and whatever be the hurailitation, Mr Gladstone will have to give way to this ex Screw manufacturer, For many .years Chamberlain has followed Gladstone, but now their paths diverge; the Premie? is fijghftng tKe battle of Lesnptei", Mim-'
ater aiidX'ominught, and Mr ChambKr-1 lain has taken up arm* for Ulster. | There are now two Irehmds, and the existence of two defined" antagonistic Irish partie3 is fatal to Mr Gladstone's project. It is doubtful, if Mr Parnell polled Ireland, whether he would get a very large majority in his favor. Ulster would carry a third of tho votes in the Island against Home Rule, and in the West and South the people are not .unanimous in their allegiance to the liberator. We wait with keen interest the issue of tiff struggle in the House of Commons. Will Mr Gladstone'draw his forces off tho hold without attempting a pitched battle, or will he persist and be defeated.
