The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, MAY 8, 1886. REFORMERS AT WORK.

We understand that the reformers of Masterton have recently met in conclave, and have signed the usual death, warrants against • hostile tradesmen,.' It is credibly, rumored that tbeir programme of future operations embraces a proposal for the, wicked bakers of the town to reduce tho price of bread, or to be hung in batches, and a threat of war to the knife. against butchers unless for the future they deliver mutton chops free at the doors of all true reformers. The propriety of revising the customs tariff-by removing the import duty on trousers is, we are told, to be also ventilated, and it is whispered that one ardent reformer is prepared to lower the' market rate of whisky. As we are informed the reformers are -kindly prepared to fix the prices at which all goods and provisions are to be sold in Masterton, and will also arrange that those who do not h'nd it convenient to pay for their supplies shall not be dunned for their money by tradesmen who have no bowels of compassion for their fellow men. It is stated that the reformers have appointeda war committee, and that the war committee in its turn has appointed a Guttling Gun in the shape of a warsecretary. We hear that the war secretary has already ■• gone forth

against ths Philistines, and chat in the first instan*) he issued a inandate calling upon each and every man who baked bread within the good town of Masterton to appear before him at the Club Hotel at a ceitain- hour• thin evening, and then and there aurrecder to the will of tho reform league, The principal baker of Masterton has we are assured responded to the summons served upon him by the War Secretary "What he means by his —r impertinence" and the other bread- ' providers it is said have forgotten to send in any reply at all to the requisition, The War Committee will now hive to consider whether it is better to''.pass the bakers" and tackle the butchers, or at once grapple with the demand lor cheap trousers. Perhaps in mercy they will give the bakers onj more chance for their hyes I It will be recognised that the work of reform in Masterton though f leasing and profitable, is not altogether unattended with difficulties and that the War Committee will need the active sympathy of the publ c Before it has fixed the rates at which everything from a needle to an anchor shall bo sold in Masterton it will have earned the gratitude of the country. Even now its efforts to cheapen bread in Masterton deserve recognition, and if the Government should happen to gazette another batch of Justices of the Peacs before the House meets we submit .that each member of the War Committee should be included in the Commision.
