The Victorian inspector statos that two rabbita will, under favorable circumstances, in three years multiply to 4,000,000. The chief inspector in New South Wales goes far beyond this calculation, and estimates the increase from a pair for three years at 13,000,009, The Council of tho Acclimatistion Society, has resolved to make application to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association of Canterbury for assistance towards paying the expenses-amounting to some £so—incurred by the Society in the introduction of tho humble bee. That the work has been successfully done is proved by the fact that the bees are heard of in all parts of the district, There was only one person nominated for the Alfredton Road Board on Saturday last-Mr Eli Smith, The high flood stopped the traffic and prevented access to the Board's office, where the nominations were to take place. The annual general meeting of the Wairarapa East Coast Pastoral aud Agricultural Society takes place at the Council Chambers, Carterton, on Saturday, May 16th, at 11.30 a.m. The business to be transacted i 3 the consideration of the report and balance-sheet-; to ballot out five members of tho Committee and elect five members in their stead; to elect auditor, and general business.. •

Not loner agoa resident at the Heads, says the Wanganui" Yeoman," conceived the notion of going in for tho farming of m&d. Having had no previous experience in this line, he thought puro white ones would be the most desirable, and with this idea he picked the birds he liked best from a large flock. For the benefit of the unlearned in theso matters it may be pointed out that pure white geeße are almost unobtainable, The wings are usually tipped with grey, and they are patchy elsewhere. The pure white male bird is vory common. The purchaser took his newly-acquired property home. He waited for them tp lay, and would probably have been waiting still if he had nob been informed that the whole flock wore ganders. He has brought himself now into a philosophical frame of mind, and has come to. the conclusion that a judicious bargain with his butcher about Christmas time may yet save him from any great loss on his first venture.- ■ Wolfe's Schnapps the -' greatest stimulant" and tonic.in the world. It is reported (says Truth) that after having retired on his pension, Sir Hercules Robinson intends to live in New Zealand,. a colony of whioluhe was. once Governor, and for which he has always had a great liking, . :,.; f Mr 0, Bruce Morison, solicitor, late of Woodvllle, who,- it will bo remembered matriculated in Mr A. R. Bunny's office, has taken the offices recently occupied by Mr Gully, solicitor, on Lambton Quay, and has commenced the practice of his profession in Wellington. Mr Morison had established a most lucrative practice at Woodville, and only disposed of.it to establish himself in a larger community. We wish him every success.. ■>■' The directors of the Golden Crown Gold Mining Co., Terawhiti, says a Wellington contemporary, hayq decided that, crushing operations shall be coinmonced, and the mine manager will make arrangements for getting the stampers in motion on Monday next, About 100 tons quartz have been on hand for some time past In tho mine, operations have lately been limited to the extension of the drive on the lode from the bottom of the shaft, Tho reef has averaged about 6ft in thickness, consisting of an intermixture of gold and mullock. Good dish prospects havobeen obtainable'from it, but nothing of payable quality lias yet been disclosed inthis part of the mine. It is proposed to hold Caledonian sports - in Grey town on the Queen's Birthday, the object being to raise a fund to be expended in tho Recreation Reserve. That the Rooreation Reserve needs much done to it in the shape of improvements, everyone is well aware, says the Standard. The Recreation Resorvo ought to have; trees planted upon it, and tho ground top dressed, moro soil boine added, The Borough Council havo called for tenders to gravel tho approaches to the Resorvo, so that this necessary work will shortly be executed. Then a fence was orected some time back by means of a "working bee," and a fair beginning has been made to get the Reserve put into order. But much moro still requires to be done, and money is needed to do it. • This idea of holding Caledonian Sports in order to raiso a fund for the purpose referred to, is a good one, and wo trust that those who have charge of arrangements will be able to carry them out successfully, Much will depend on having a good programme of Caledonian Sports. The best thing the promoters of the moverrfent can do is to look up some of the of past years' sports given by the Caledonian Society at Wellington. If they could write to Mr H. M, Lyon, the courteous and genial Secretary of the Caledonian Society at-Wellington, he would most cortainly afford them all the information they desired.on the subject, and send them a few copies of programmes to boot, We, Temperance Herald, have received a pamphlet, published by J, T. Smith and Co., Christchurch, wherein the question "Does the Bible allow the"' drinking of fermented wines J"., is asked and. answered,'and which contains an appendix, with an analysis of.fermented and unfermented wine .made by Professor Bickerton.of Canterbury College, Christchurch. This pamphlet'of ffjty-six pages contains a large amount of useful information on the subject of. which it treats. The author deals fully and fairly with the question submitted to him, and makeß an examination of,the several texts of Scripture "that seem to countenance strong drink," as well as those by which the use of these drinks are condemned. Baving done so ho. arrives at the following .conclusions : Ist, t That the word wine as used by the translators of tho Bible, is a generic term and means general products. 2nd.' That in passages where the word wine is used with approval, and spoken of as a good thing, it invariably means vine fruit only, 3rd. That where tho term is used without aiiydoubt as to its,, reference to fermented ■ wine, is always spoken of ■ with dissapproval and warning. 4th. That whore fermented drinks, made" from various commodities other than grapes, and translated wine in the Bible, are mentioned, their use is always condemned in tolo. sth, It is demonstrated that the wine which our Saviour used when he instituted tho Lord's Supper could not have been fermented wine, as on the occasion of the pasßover feast, held by the Jews, and partaken of by Christ and his disciples on the night of .its observance, and after partaking of which he instituted the Supper, the Jews at this feast were by diyino commaud prohibited from having any'leaven found about their and so- could not have had in their houses any fermented or leaven grape juice or wine, without! violating the divine command-;, and this practice of putting away all leaven is continued by orthodox Jews at the, passover feast down to the present day, and where fermonted wine only is obtainable, they make their own fermented' wine—the use of any other kind being strictly, forbidden, . . ': ■■ .."• Tho popularity and onormom sales of Wolfe's Scunafps testify itsinirmaic merits.. •„
