PUBLIC MEETING AT MAURICEVILLE.

o _ A publio meeting was held at Mauriceville on Saturday-last, but on account of the bad weather the attendance was not very large. Mr W. Jessen \m voted to the chair, and opened the meeting by .stating the objects for which it was called, viz,, to) consider the qualifications of the candidates for the cominp election. Hb said it was important to gee men elected who would work together in the interests of the whole district. Mr Aulin asked if any candidates had come forward, when it was stated that Messrs Forsberg, Jackson, Anderson, Peterson, Herlund, and Jessen had boen nominated. An elector present said he thought the nomination had been done in a hole and corner way, to which the Chairman replied that it was just the opposite, as he had called the meeting on the eve of the nomination day so as to give electors an opportunity to bring forward any candidate they choose, and as_ every qualified elector had an equal right to come forward, he did not see that thero was any unfairness in nominating when the opportunity offored. Mr Aulin said he understood the meeting was called to hear the views of candidates, and lie was disappointed as only one (Mr Jcaaen) had spoke. The Chairman remarked that thero was a good opportunity then for candidates to express their views, and it equally applied to intending candidates if there were any. Mr Forsberg said there was not much for him to say, as this was the first election. If returned, he would endeavor to keep the finished roads in repair, so that they should not go to ruin, as they were now in a fair way of doing, The Chairman said the new Board would be an improvement. The Masterton Road Board had spent about £l2 a year on their roads, and then ouly threw it in thebogholes, Mr Uunderson defended the action of the Board to the best of his ability, but the general opinion was that Mauriceville had been shamefully neglected. The usual vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
