Messrs Lowes aiid lorns notify for sale 300 full mouth ewes, and 39, head of young hand-reared, cattle for their regular Masteiion Stock Sale, Wednesday, April 21st. . Mr■■'J,. Montgomery is the successful, tenderer for the additions and alterations to the Kketahuna and Mauricovillii schools,. Tlic Eketahuim. school is to be enlarged .to provide routii for eighty scholars. ■ Mr Wardell denies , the rumor, which has been circulated in Wellington that- lie .is:- about to.retire on a pension. His health is improving, and he hopes shortly • to b'o able to resume his magisterial duties. . Tlie motion to rescind the resolution passed at the last meeting of the Wairaraiia East County Council, roducii.g ; the . wages of .tiie roiidmeii to six shillings'per day, was broutrhfc forward at the Council meeting yesterday, and lo3tby six.votes, to two. TheAVaipawa Mail leports that a native had a most miraculous escape from being •run-over by .-the train.at the Pukeliou station. -The morning train/wasproceed-, ing as usual towards Xapier, arid a Maori was on boaid,-bound. for Pukeliou. liy' .some;clian.ce he bad forgotten to tell tlie guard to 3top at the station, "and. seeing thafcthe train was going past it, lie jumped oh to the Piikeiiou platform. Xot landing fairly on his feet, the native fell, and ■ immediately rolled backwards towards the rails, finally toppling over the ledcje of the platform and falling between it and the passinc train. There were three carriages to pass him when our informant saw him, and, so far as he could tell, the space was barely sufficient to allow of his lying there in safety. The axle of the first coach knocked the unfortunato in the small of the back, and the platform of the next jammed his head nearer to the stage. By this time he had become aware of the dangerous nature of the position, and fairly wriggled into the smallest possible space a man could occupy. This saved him. The train pulled up immediately, the guard seeing the accident, and a passenger, who was also bound in reality for tlie same station, got out. Ho found the Maori very cautious about moving, in case there might be some more ugly bumps to follow, and finally saw that thero were two or three places oil his body where the skin was grazed off, and where some axle grease had been left upon his cloths. As it was difficult to ascertain the native's name; and as he had learned enough wisdom to refrain from jumping off moving trains in future, it is not likely any action will bo taken by the authorities—iudeed.it is hardly necessary ; all that the native could say when questioned was, "Ka kino! no gullu the jump!"
