THE DRAINAGE SCHEME.

Sir.—As I understand somo of the members of the Borough Council are strongly in fav>r of taking a vote of tho ratepayers of Masterton upon tho question of a water supply and drainage works, would it not bo as well for them to count the costs bofore going in for such a schomo ? Have they considered for a moment what a number of claims they would have against them for injury to business alone? Do. they think the medical and pharmaceutical fratornity of this town would sit tamely by and see perpretrated such a monstrous iniquity as this would be to them 1 Why their business would bo spoiled, and tho Friendly Societies of the town, who are strong in numbers, do you think they would stand being deprived of the chief inducement which the people have for joining thoir ranks ? The Government, and other Insurance offices would also raise a rumpus, Their business would declino considerably if the death rate was lowered, and altogether this .idea of those headstrong speculative members of tho' Council, (Ithmk they are all on the Works Committee) is far and away too preposterous. There's not half enough widows or orphans in tho place yet, and property is not anything like at its lowest value, although fast falling. Therefore, Mr Editor, give the patent niedicino vendors and others a little longer lease of a good thing, and don't go and improve them out of the town. I ■ shall stop my subscriotions to the Hospital at once if the proposed'• drainajjo ' and water supply scheme is carried. 1 •Yours, &c„ ' Typhoid.
