SIR JULIUS VOGEL'S POLICY.

The following letter by Mr Hawkinsi" taken from the Evening Press;—" Sre Jt- 1 When Sir Julius came to the colony W[ announced himself as having a mission to • restore commercial confidence and assure to the land settlers a steady prosperity freed from the weight of oppressive taxa-v,. tion and from the panics of theoretio legislation. 1 hive just received a letter from a friend who is now leaving the colony—he is a man in large business in London and having control over considerable sums of money. Let us see with what views ho will return to London, and what views he i is likoly to give nionied people there as the result of his examination of the state of thecolony and Sir Julius's policy. He says :

• "Ihave been out in the colony (not his first visit) sinco 20th December, and after a month spent down South and on a trip to tho Sounds and Lake Wakatipu, 1 have been to Nelson, Blenheim, Christchurch, overland to Hokitika and Graymouth, and to Taranaki, Auckland, and the Hot Lakes, Gisborne and Napier, finishing up with Wellington. I sail tomorrow for Melbourne. lam very sorry not to havo seen you and exchanged views as to the present condition and future prospects of the colony. The penoral view is depressing in the extreme, but there are exceptions in the prosperity ofV. certain districts and places. Pr<ce offilland must fall still further in iny opinion" before there will be any general reaction, and some parts of the colony will, 1 think, nevor recover.tho former state, of . things, which was temporary and fictitious. What chance is there of a wholesomo policy where the majority of voters are. .-, sure to indorse Yogel's policy of borrowing more,'and so postpone the evil day that must come. The land and mortgage companies must'unload and face their • losses, which up to now they have hidden from their shareholders." Now let me give by way of emphasis to., this view of a man of business, who to my knowledge, wishes well to New Zealand, the figures of indebtedness of the ■ colony and other Australian colonies;— - Dpoember 31st, 1881

| My friend thinks the" working classes'tig will at all hazards support Sir Julius, f o? 9 the sake of employment. I hope not \\ hope there are enough with' fatelligencQ to see that what ruins, the colony must eventually be fatal to them. I w|l conclude with a paragraph from an article in an English financial organ on the Argentine Republic:-" The truth is that the Republic has been committing the blunder to which all young and vigourous states aro liable-it has been endeavouring to develop itself more rapidly than is prudent, and as a consequence has run itself into monetary and financial difficulties. Out of these, if Us remurses arc mnfidly husbanded, it will no doubt eventually emerge." For "the Republic" mayvja wjt fitly, read "the colony of JN.ow Zealand," anf » bo, should not ft\wy good colpniat be up and doing to answer tho man who cari only nee. sanation for himself'in pluuotW the. colony i n t o hopeless disaster; wjt'h \ resoluto No! and to. giye^t"• w"'MJ emphatic force in the ballot Jainfe, Route S.
