UNITED DISTRICT BOARD.

(United Press Association,)

■Wellington, Match 4, . A meriting of the United District Board was held this afternoon. A long opinion' on the position.of the Board, drawn up by Mr Travers, was read. Mr Travers explained the working of the Act at considerable length, He stated that he believed Mr Stout and Mr Martin agreed with him in his opinion on the constt uction of tl)e tjot. ft)§ point was w§a to be done by tlio Board to give effect to the Apt, and ho thought he could show that it need not be a very difficult thing to work the Act, providing all boards worked together, although perhaps, it required some amendments. The first thing tq be done was to sub-divide the district and declare what local authorities are liable to contribute, then to call upon separate institutions which, have been incorporated to send in their estimates, and to call upon the declared local' contributory authorities to Bend in their estimates for charitable aid. It was resolved that the Wellington City' Council, the Hutt City Council; the Hutt' County Coihjcil, the Horo'whoiiua Gouuty,Coqncil, the Wair&reps' Ea»t and Wfest" Qbunty

Conticils, with the boroughs of Masterton and Greytown, be sub-divided as contributing bodies, The Chairman read a letter from the Government, replying to the Board's application tor £SOO for benevolent institutions, stating that the Government could not advance the money till the Board called upon the local bodies tor contributions. Mr Travora said he believed that as soon as the Board took the necessary steps to obtain contributions from the local bodies, the Government would have no objections to advancing the monev out of the consolidated fund, because the Act gave them power to deduct from subsidies due to local bodies.
