THE MANIPOURI ACCIDENT.
(United Press Association.) Gisborne, this day, The third mate of the Manipouri is doing well, and all the others are progressing favorably. An inquest was held at Lloyd on Saturday, Petersen and Dr Pollen were the only witnesses examined. Petersen deposed that he went below with 16. others, and found tho place full ,of smoke, but there was no flame. While below he vomited and they all coughed severely. They, had to go on deck for short intervals. He was below from 3.15 p.m. to 4.45. He became unconscious aftertheworkwaßover; other men were already sick; Dr Pollen said death was caused bv asphyxia, caused through the capillary tubes above the lungs becoming blocked throush inflammation, caused by tho inhalation of nitric acid,. which was a patent irritant of tho internal parts with which it came in ■ contact! A moistened spongo would have'beenapartial preventative, if not wholly. The captain told him of the smell being; peculiar. He had directed the men' to wear a covering of cotton waste over their mouth. Some, did and some did not. The jury declined to give a verdict until further evidence was produced as to the stowing, and whether there was any palpable negligence on tho part of anyono, The inquest was therefore adjourned until the return of the vessel from Melbourne. 'Later. Mr Baker, third mate, died at midnight.
