THE MANAPOURI ACCIDENT.

Gisborne, this day. The Manipouri arrived from Auckland at half-past one and signals were made for the doctor. On the launch going off it was found that a terrible accident had occurred at 3 p.m. yesterday. The Iwtohes were taken off to get a parcel for a lady and smoke issued in lartje volumeß, and, from the smell, it waa known to be smoko of some kind of aoid. Mr Morris, the chief officer- and some other men went below to try and get at the cause. Unfortunately it took some time to get at the package, containing the acid, the men being compelled to breathe poisonous, aft for a long period. Sometime after- the njun got the package o.u,t, tho Chief Officer became insensible, foaming at the mouth. One of the passengers, a doctor, did all he could until the arrival of assistance from the launch, but before Doctor Pollen of Gisborno got aboard, the chief officer was dead, The third mato and cook are sinkinc fast, and the doctors give no hope, The rest are doing well. The cause of tho disaster was a small package of nitric or sulphuric acid. Little damage was done to the cargo. Napiek, This day. At a meeting of the passengers of the Manapouri last night, resolutions were carried testifying to the efficient anil, successful efforts of the Captain, pjeera, and crew of the steamer \<,\ remove the cause of the aooklent, and their deep regret at th.e death of the chief officer who fid nobly sacrified his life in the heroio discharge of his duty,. A letter of condolence wiil be sent to Mrs Morris. A subscription in aid of the officers and mon and those dependant on them, who nave suffered by the accident, was opened, and £SO subscribed amongt the saloon passengers.
