.. ?:"The adjourned meeting of the Carterton Special Settlement Association was held night last in Mr F, E Wooers Auction rap, Thoro was about Jorty present, and Mr 6'. M, Gardener was voted to' the ,chair. ' The minutes pi" the previous meeting worp read and confirmed,- Mr G, A. Fairbrpther, Secretary, read correspondence from the Commissioner of Crown Ifflds; also from Mr W. C: Buchanan, M.H.R., recommending the Mangaone block to the Association. The Committee laid thejr report/ before the meeting which was adopted, They also submitted a oode of by.laws for the guidance of the. Association which were also approved of and adopted, There are 4G names on the roll of the Association, and all have paid up their fees. Messrs A. Hughan, Geo. Yule, and Mr Carde (surveyor of Greytown), wero appointed delegotes to inspect the block of land. A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a close. A co.romißsiQn sat jn. Wellington to, hear an- appeal sl(de $ ,t))e Hutt County asrainst the assessment of ,tlieDis,trict Aid Board, This being the first 'case of the. kind, }t is looked upon with spme degree of interest as a. test 0 f } e g a i status of the Board, The cntnmissjon consisted of Mr fl, S. Wardell, R,M. on behalf pf the Government, Mr H. J. Williams pn behalf of the. District Board, and Mr Thomas Mason for the Hutt County Council. The objection raised by the Council was that the vote was disproportionate to the number of cases sent from that County. The commission differed from the first, Mr Mason, for tjie County Council, holding that the basis upon which the rate had been struck was the wrong one, and that it should have been assessed upon the population of the district, Tho ratepayers of the Hutt' County have already been put to some expense in standing out against the imposition of the tax, and they will be put to considerably more before commission rises; . The enquiry was adjourned for a week to allow the Hutt County Council to obtain legal aid. If all the public bodies interested would tako joint action with the Hutt County Council, there would be a prospect of the Act being improved into a different shape during the next/session.
