FATAL ACCIDENT.
Yesterday afternoon a serious and fatal accident occurred in Queen-street through a horse, bolting with a trap containing two men, one of whom was killed, and the other 'seriously injured, It appears from the evidence of an eye witness that at about ten minutes past two o'clock yes-, terday afternoop, when the streets were comparatively quiet, arid 'few people about, a horse and trap was driven round by the Post Office from' Ball-street into Queen-street. .The. trap was occupied, by two men named Thomas Donefjy and James Burke, and tyiplly was driving at' a moderate pnc'c A dog, attachedtq jkhe trip by a chum, was running behind, a'ndjpjnje $ tjie yelping, purs which infest rushed a,t ft, and' it pm forward arid came in contacj; wi.th the horse's heels, thereby startiingtheanimalsolAai $ Suddenly, bolted:. The .trap 'wheel' BJrjjejjc against the post in front ofjMr'L.- Jones' fruit shop, and the jerk threw Burke put on to the road. He was immediately picked up, and found to have unstained a
severe cut on' the temple. Two chains from; where Burke was thrown out, in front, of Caselberg's store, Dorielly jumped out of the trap over the wheel on the off side, but in falling he alighted on his head. Those who saw him fall immediately rushed and picked him lip, when he was found to be insensible. He was conveyed, to Mr Eton's s chemist shop opposite the Scene of .'the accident, and Dr Beard'was sent for|. In the meantime everything that Vas'possible was done by Mr Eton for the injured man, but it was evident he could not recover, and when Dr Beard arrived at three o'clock he pronounced life'extinct. The horse in tho meantime had continued its mad career, the series of accidents having increased its alarm, and at the first turning Renallsfcreet, it swerved and rushed against Morris' corner shop, smashed a shaft and the side of the shop, and'then bounded over to the fence on the other side of the street, where it made another smash. It was captured there, and taken; to Neill's stables. The deceased Thomas; Donelly was carried into the the Princo of Wales Hotel to await the result of the coroner's inquest. Deceased loaves a wife.and four small ohildren, the youngest being only a few months old, flowas a man of robust health, about forty years of age, and was much respected by- his mates and those who know him. He had recently been engaged in harvesting operations at Mr Montgomery's farm, Manaia, near which his family are living, Burke also lives close by, and owned the horse and trap.
