Last night at about seven o'clock, whilst some children were playing mi a lot of lons in Dixou Street, immediately behind Renall's mill, a heavy matai log got shifted from the fork of a tree upon which it was resting, and rolled over upon a little eight-year old lad named Ernest Cook, striking him a violent blow upon the back of his head and killing him instantaneously, The blood spirted out of,both ears, and his brothers arid tho other ohildren playing with them, althc/uj;h very much frightened got the little fellow free, and he was taken to his home which was close by, Dr Beard was immediately sent for, and on his arrival pronounced life to be extinct. An inquest was held this morning at Toohill's Royal Hotel, and a verdict of accidental death was returned. Deceased was a son of Herbert Cook, a platelayer in the Government employ. The first quarterly inspection of the new year, of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers, was jield lajjt night in the Theatre Royal, The corps, numbereel 50 rank and file, In charge being Captain Donald, and Lieutenants Cameron and Thompson. Tho company were inspected by Colonel Butts and Major Bunny, The men were then exercised by Drill-Instructor Bezar and Lieutenant Thompson, the latter drilled the men in a most creditable manner considering it was his first display since his promotion to Lieutenant. After drill the company marchod out, headed by their splendid brass band, which played (quicksteps) "Triumphant," "British Valor," "Reypille," and " The soldier's last letter." A meeting tyaa afterwarfhi held, and arrangements were mwle for attending the Wanganui encampment, Three new members were proposed, At the conclusion of the parade Colonel Butts expressed himself greatly pleased with tho general appeaaance of tho men, and congratulated the band on tho excellent time kept in the inarch out, and also upon the very creditable manner in which they performed " The Reception" slow march, We beg to call the attention of our readers to Messrs L.
