MASTERTON HOSPITAL COMMITTEE,
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton Hospital Comraitteo was held at the Institute yesterday afternoon, Present.—Messrs Boddington (chairman) W. Perry, J. Bennett, B. P, Perry, Buttle, Paige, and Payton. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the Treasurer reported a debt; balance- of £ll 5s 9d, and the following accounts wero passed for paynient-Caselberg & Co, £9los 4d, WhitU Donaldson, £2l 3s.
Letters were read from the Colonial Secretary's office stating that only twothirdß of the subsidy due, would be paid direct, and that the balance must be claimed through tho District Board, also from Mrs Ewington complaining of the management of the Hospital, and giving advico thereon.
Mr B. P. Perry, the visiting member for the present month, reported that a patient complained of insufficient medical attendance, also that a piece of land which adjoined the hospital section was now procurable on favorable terms. It was resolved to make inquiries into tho alleged complaint and to defer the addition to site question for tho consideration of the Trustees about to be elected.
.Mr Payton moved the following resolution :—That in the opinion of this committee it is desirable to maintain the Hospital in the future as iu the past, without bavins; recourse to a rate. He said that for ten years past he had acted as a hospital treasurer, first at Greytown, and then at'Masterton, and he had never .realised any necessity for a rate. He believed that if-one were struck now it would injure their institution. Mr Bennett considered that a rato would be death to their station lists.
The resolution was seconded by Mr Paige, and carried unanimously, Mr Buttle expressing an opinion that their present mode of obtaining revenue created a better feeling in the community than a rate.
The Chairman said he regretted to learn that Mr Payton would not bs a candidate at the coming election of Trustees, as the contractors' Act passed last session made it penal for any member of a local body of this character to supply it, either directly or indirectly. He considered the Act a bad one, as it would deprive many local bodies of useful members, He moved, That this Committeo exceedingly regret to learn that MrPayton will not be a candidate at the forthcoming election of Trustees inconsequence of the Local Bodies Contractors Act; 1885, passed last session, and desifesioplaoe on record its appreciation of the very valuable services he has rendered to the Masterton Hospital as a member of the Committee '■and Hon. jfr?asureft extending over a period of soven years, The was seconded by Mr B. P. Perry and carried. Mr Payton in acknowledging it, said that if the interests of the Hospital had demanded his services, ho would have given them in spite of the Act, but he believed that a very efficient body of Trustees would bo constituted without his assistance.
