Tho Hawera Star saya i-Assuming that it would cost 60s per head to run a steamer with 150 head of beasts across to Sydney, this would leave about 18s to 1.9s per 1001b for the shipper, which, at present rates would be a good price. The risk would be considerable \ and no doubt if frozen beef or mutton could be shipped from New Plymouth instead of live stock, the trade would be conducted at much less risk, and at much less expense for freight, The project is well worth ventilating; and it seems to us that Now Plymouth people are the right persons to make a first move in that direction. If they should now offer sufficient inducement, they can rely on the support from graziers in this part of the provincial district, who would regard any such friend in need as a friend indeed,

Writing on Mr Wakefield's speech at Leeston the Canterbury Press thinks it was in many respects one of the most important which has been held since the session closed. It enables us to form somoopinion as to the attitude,of the country settlers in this part of the colony towards the large questions which are at the present time occupying tho public mind. It is satisfactory to find that the opinion of tho backbone of the colony—its real producers-is sound, aiid that the country settlers can be depended on to tako & rational view of public affairs when the time again comes round for consulting them.
