The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13, 1886.

Mr E. Wrigley, architect, invites tenders for the erection of a store room and loose box, If the crops as a whole in tho district are not very good this year, it does not follow that they are all bad. There is a paddock of oats on Mr W. 0; Buchanan's property near the Waiohine bridge which is as good as any we liava ever seen in the district. It is estimated to yield about 80 bushels to the acre! Mesrs Lowes & loins, tho local agents for tho National Fire and Marino Insurance Company of New Zealand, have issued their office calendar for 1886, which has a very striking appearance, being white figures on a black ground, and mounted on a neat view of New Zealand scenery. At tho meeting of the Wairarapa East County Council yesterday, the Clerk stated that he intended to provido forms for tho public attending Council meetings. Tho only sitting accommodation at present provided was the floor, on which people had the option of standing if. they preferred it, The Wanganui Herald writes:-" Some time ago we mentioned iv case in which a Maori woman died in tho train, and the railway authorities wanted £1 for carrying the corpse. Since then a southern writer has added the following to our par : The immediate difficulty was got over,' I believe, by a gentleman making himself responsible for the money. Since then it is believed thaMhe question has given great'trouble in the General Manager's office'in Wellington. The difficulty was that the relatives of deceased could not be charged for the corpse, Thoy did not embark her on the. train as such. Finally, I believe, it was determined with a sigh to suffer the loss. I wonder what tlio'.natives thought of the working of the railway system, and of civilisation in general, aprogos of this incident.

A new advertisement from Mr B. Feißt appears in another column, From official documents regarding the closing of the Dreyerfcown Post Office, it appears that,, though Mr Osborne was not j ( unwilling to continue as postmaster until a,successor was appointed, lie!resigned, from the Ist inst., and stated that lie could not recommend anyone as a sue-' cessor. . There is'no'blame to be attached to anybody, At the same time the residents at Dreyertown are undoubtedly the sufferers. A most welcome and unexpected rain set in about 8 o'clock last night. The weather had been intensely hot all day, and as the barometer had an upward tendency, the general impression was that there was no prospect of a break, At the time named, however, a change took place, and light rain has continued to fall, The wind has changed to the south, and the atmosphere to-day is very mild. Though too late for cereals, the rain will do a great deal of good to the potato crop. A difference of opinion having arisen as to whether the marker at the Prince of Wales Hotel or a local professor of the tonsorial art is the best cuist, the matter was settled with a match of two hundred up last night, The game was very evenly contested, and towards the end, the marker had a lead of ten, One little mistake here, however, lost him the game, which, was won by four points. There was, according to several spectators, a mistake of twelve in the marking, which would, of course, have turned the tables. Yesterday's meofcing of the Wairarapa East County Council may aptly be described as flat, stale, and unprofitable, First of all, a considerable amount of time was spent in discussing the finances of the Alfredton riding, ovor which Or Maquarie and the County Clerk differed, though each was right from his particular point of view. Then there were two petitions for the formation of new road districts, and the plans were subjected to along examination, the boundaries boing discussed at such length that even some of the Councillors tired of it, and left. The following tenders have been received by the Wairarapa East County Council :-Opaki Manawatu Road, metalling repairs contract No. 22-M, O'lirien. £llO lGs (accepted); J. Anderson, £lO2 lis Id; N. Tho usual monthly meeting of fcho Mas-, terton Hospital Committeo was held' yesterday afternoon 'at the Institute. Present-Messrs Boddineton (Chairman), Bennett, Fulton, loms, Payton, and Paige. Tho minutes of the .previous meeting were read and confirmed, and tho Treasurer reported-a debit balance of £1 19s 9d. A Gazette notice, ro incorporating the Hospital as a separate institution was read, The following accounts were passed for payment, viz., W.'Sellar£9 7s 3d, T. G. Masun £Bl3s 2d, M, Caselborg & Co. £ls 16s. Mr B. P. Perry was appointed visiting momborfor tho ensuing month.

The Wairarapa East County Council was in a humor to increase the number of Road Boards yesterday, as two petitions for new districts were received and wanted. Mr Jessen attended to support tho petition m favor of the new Mauriceville district, which has been pending for the last twelve months', and had the satisfaction of taking back a satisfactory answer to those who supported the movement, The petitioners from Eketahuna wore represented by Mr Anderson, wJio, after attesting the signatures, also obtained a favorable reply. Thus three new road districts have been constituted in the County within a month.
