GOING FROM HOME FOR NEWS.
It is a somewhat singular thing that whenever the Government of this Colony requires information ofageneral character, the officer who is instructed to collect it, is Bent as far away from home as possible. Another instance ot this extraordinary habit has been brought under our notice by the receipt from the Government Printer, of a copy of Professor Kjrjf's rnport on Native Forests, and the state' of the Timber Trade. Professor Kirk appears to have hurried straight off to Southland when he received his instructions, then took a look at the remainder of the Middle Island, and having finished that, skipped right over to Auckland. The only part pf tho Wellington provincial district which he fouchcd is along the route of the North {stand Trunk Railway, Now, we think that the Manawatu, Wairarapa, and Hawk.es Bay Districts, ore just as important as regards the timber trade as any portion of the Middle Island, and that being SO, we sre rather curious to Jearn whether- Pressor Kirk will discover that he has made an omission, 01 whether the Commissioner of forests will think it worth while to give him a hint on the subject.
