The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 1886. MR REETHAM'S ADDRESS.

Mr Beeiii am addveased lii? constituents, the electors of Wairarapa in the Theatre Royal on Tuesday evening, &n,d if we may judge from the tone of the meeting, he bad the. ear, goodwill and sympathy of his audience from beginning to end. There was a complete absence of the packing and consequent rowdyism, by,which q. tew select and well known opponents distinguished themselves on former oocassions, }Ve do not know if they have changeithnjr opinions, whether tbeir own good sense prevailed, or .whether Mr Stout's remarks on rowdyism in the course ot a lecture recently delivered by him in Maaterton jstung them into common sense. Whatever may be the reason, they are to be upon the change for the better whidi the;/ exhibited in their manners. Mr Bketuah 1 touched upon a large number of subjects that are of public interest, and then did not get through all his notes.'. We think that the account which he gave of his stewardship is an eminently satisfactory one. He kept the promise which he made to the electors to give the Siout-Yoqel Government a fair trial, and, like many others who [expected great things from them, he soon found, himself thoroughly disappointed, We trust the electors will thoroughly, realise the difference between the promise made by Sir Julius Yogel iu his Finaj)/:i?,l Statement, and the manner in which the subsidies have been distributed under jthe Local Bodies Finance and Powers Bill, The promise of the .Colonial Tyeksurej that new and

outlying district's should' receive the greater share, becan.se, by ussisting > them, they weredoveloping tiieresources of the country, Nothing could be faiter and more reasonable than this. But what was the result? As Mr Beetharc.pointed out, the County of Selwyn, which has all its roads made, and over £50,000 lying in the Bank awaiting investment, got the maximum Bum of £5,000, while Wairarapa East, which could expend £IOO,OOO on roads to open land, and would then want more, has to b8 content with £690. If Mr Bertram's speech has done no other good, this one fact alone should open the eyes of the electors, and convince tliem that the prepent Government is doing far less practical work in opening the country for settlement than any of its predecessors, We can hardly agree with all that Mr Beetuam said with regard to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act, It is true that the district lias the management of its own Hospitals, but it had thatbefore, and that, too, without being bound to raise a certain sum to assure the independence of the two institutions. With regard to charitable aid, we are in a worse position, Every praise is due to Messrs Beetham and Buchanan for their efforts to preserve the independence of tho district with regard to the administration of this portion of local government, Mr BeetiiaM's reference to the rapacity and unsci'upulousness of some of the goldfiulds members gave the electors an insight to the inner or lobby life of Parliament, and wo are afraid that the picture was not a very pleasing one. This traffic in votes appears, however, to find favor with some of our casehardened politicians, for Mr Renall, when he had learnt the price that had been paid, exclaimed, " More power to them." It is to be hoped that this sentiment did not find ap echo in the breast of even a single elector, and that neither of the Wairarapa constituencies will ever return :i representative who is capable of eating his principles in such a manner. On the question of Protection, too, Mr.DEETHAM and his constitutents seemed to be in entire accord, and we trust that the practical manner in which he handled the subject jvill do a good deal towards preventing the Gvil from taking root in this district. The defence made with regard to the so-called endowment to the Wellington Harbor Board, is, we think, perfectly sound, and leaves no i'o.on) for carpers. Indeed, had tho proposal bees brought forward, as it should have been, under .apptjier term, no fault would ever have beet} found with it. Mr Beetiiam made an important explanation with regard to the effect of Captain Russell's motion to reduce the Public Works Estimates by 500,000. He showed clearly that it fas not intended to proceed with any portion of the railway through the Forty-Mile Bush this year, except the section to Mauriceville, the money for which had alraady been appropriated, and that the .motion therefore did not involve the Iqss of a. single.penny to the district. These wer.e, we t)ie most prominent points in the upeech, ppd we believe that there are very few electors in the-district who are not in accord with Mr Bebtijaji on all of them,

Tiie hermitjcally sealed windows of the Theatre Royal have at'last been made to open and close at will, thanks' to % common sense of the lessee, Mr 6, Cokei\ This improvement will allow of free ventilation to the dross-circle, a want tl)4 has been long felt, and tended to keep the soata unoccupied, Other improvements have also been made, though not so injpsrtainfc, Matting has been put down jn the JjaJl, and the ladies' and gentlemen's have all been refitted ftnd furnished.

Messrs Lowes and lorns add to their stock sale for .13 inst,, a line of beef, also store bullocks and quiet heifors, >.

The following interesting advertisement appears in a Wellington paper Found, on my ground, New Year's Day, one Lady's Jersey and ono Regalia. Owners can have, the same by paying cost' of advertisement. T. Hayward. We are requested to draw attention to Mr F, H, Wood's unreserved sale of furniture, drapery, clothing, etc., that will be held at his Masterton rooms on Saturday next, As will be seen by the ftdvevtiaemenfc, tho list is a very comprehensive one, and should attract numerous buyers.

Yesterday was the hottest day we have experienced in the Wairarapa. At 10 a.m. a standard thermometer registered 136 in tho sun, and at 4 p.m., although the sun was partially hidden by smoke, it read 132. The highest attained in the shade was 86, At sunset it still stood at 80.

Mr Wood informs us that we have been misinformed as to the neglect of Cole Street, and has furnished us with dates on which, according to notices, heattended the Btreet for the purpose of removing night soil. From these dates it appears that the locality has been visited once a week.

A little boy about five or six years old, son of Mr j. O, Hayward, foil off his horse at Featherston yesterday afternoon while the animal was walking, and as he came down head first on the metal, it waß at first feared that he had sustained serious injuries. The little fellow was insensible for some time, and when he came to he had a hearty cry—a sure sign that lie was not very badly hurt.

Messrs Lowes and lorns make further additions to their sales for Saturday next. They sell a quantity of drapery, clothing, carpets, etc., for the Auckland Co-oper-ativo Company, They also add a line of 4 useful hack horses, being owned by a runholder in Hawkes Bay, who is passing through Masterton on his way to England. The horses are quiet and servicable, have been used for ladies, gentlemen or boys, and will be sold without reserve,.

We remind those interested in the sub* ject that Mr Tlios Walker, the eminent Sydney Freethought lecturer, will appear at the Theatre Eoyal this evening, when ho will lecture on the somewhat peculiar subject, the "Death of the Devil, or a peep into Hell." Mr Walker has earnt for himself the reputation ot being a splendid elocutionist, as well as rhetorician, .throughout the Australian colonies, and this, togother with tho subject he has chosen, should draw a good audience. The charge for admission is very reasonable,

Mr F. H. Wood has taken a lease of .the Taratalii Sale Yards (lafco Mr Say's,) says tho Standard, and is now effecting extensive alterations and additions there. When completed they will be very convenient for the purposes of stock sales, which it is Mr Wood's intention to hold every fortnight. It is gratifying to find this gentleman showing such enterprise, and it Is to be hoped that the public will second his efforts by sending in stock, Tho stock sales are of great service to the settlers.

The balance sheet for the past quarter, and auditors report wore submitted and adopted, and accounts for the quarter wore passed for payment. 11l view of the fact that several somewhat mysterious fires have broken out recently, and that the town is threatened by fires from outside, we think it would be a wise plan to appoint two or three persons as night watchmen. There can bi) no doubt that property in the town is lii ifejjgey fp; l )} bpt!l sources, and if watchmen, who migjit also bo wqrnjn constables, were appointed, they niiglii manage to clear the town of the loafing element by the time the danger from bush fires had boon averted, We commend tho subject to the serious consideration of tho Borough Council,'and to that of those of our citizens who are most interested.

A detachment of the Five Brigade under Captain Peaoook last night tested the Abyssinian pump sunk by Mr Kingdon in Church-street, opposite Mr Perry'a shop. The hose was taken along to the Prince of Wales Hotel, which, together with the stables in the rear, received a thorough drenching outside. The Bank of New Zealand, and the shops to Mr Eton's corner were similarly treated. After .afyqus ar, hour ai)d a half of pumping, the supplyof w.iie)' was found to bp aj gqod as ever; the engine worked'' wtih\the greatest ease, ar.d the members of the Brigade are satisfied that this source of supply is'a very valuable one in case of fire, It js y/iH'th while 'considering whether similar pipes might npt bp sunk with advantage in two or three con: vonient localities in the town,
