The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1886.

The Marlborough Times has changed hands, having become the property of Messrs Card and Rabone.

lb is expected that about one hundred of the larger trees that were damaged by the recent fire in the Park, will die. A meeting of the Featherston Domain Board was held on Monday, but the business transacted, was not of an important nature. '

Amusement is occasionally caused by the blunders committed by Home papers in Now Zealand and Australian geography ; but wo have not always to go so far a-fielcl for them, For instance, yesterday's N.Z. Times coolly states that : Woodville is in the Wellington provincial district; In the article in which this {act is announced, it is further stated that in each.of ; tho spcoial settlements that have reoontly been formed in the Forty-Miio Bush, there is a.township, and an acre in each .township is allotted to Mch settler. It will, perhaps, surprise our contemporary to learn that only one of the new settlements has a township, and that.the settlera had to purchase the site from the Government for cash, that they dividod.it into seotions entirely according to their .ow,n ideas'of convenience.

At 2 o'oloGkthis morning the inmates of the Prince of Wales H.q,te} were aroused by an alarm of fire. Mrs JSSfagg was promptly downstairs, and saw" smote issuing from the direction of the stables at the back of the hotel. After arousing, one of the men, she ran to the stables,, which she found open and full of smoke. Fortunately, full buckets of water were standing.near lie horse-trough, ai,d were brought along by.ihe man who 'had bsen around, .and befprp any futfher alarm was raised the fire.was out, and all ganger averted. On examining the premises this jjiorning the studs and plates' of '.the, stable were jfound to be burnt partially; through, and a iafc pi straw, which fortunately was damp,.had teen alight. It is presumed that,a swagger hod .taken up his quarters there andjiad' thrown down a flighted' match. Whoever gave the alarm,.immediately cleared out;"and no : op,w,ai.faun^,arpunjJ.' the .premises'. A! rewatd for jnfQNfi&tfph that \conviet: the offiauife'r. .'■ ' , '' '".;

Complaints are made from Cole-street that the nightsoil contractor has failed in his duty -in visiting that locality, it being now six weeks since he was called, At this time season of the year the danger arrising from this source is very great, The result of the investigation of the Featherston Racing Club into the pulling of the horse Torea Hate Rough Cut), is that the horse and- his owner, Mr W. Donald, have been disqualified fortwolve months, and tho jockey, Percy Hayward, for three months,
