The country about Masterton was illumined last night with fires,- 'One which'was burning on Dr Hosking's run threw up an immense illumined volume of smok'e, by the reflection of which'ordinary printcould attimes be read. Various rumors as to.damage having been done appear to be without foundation.
Constable Healy met with a nasty accident on the first day of the races, Just as the last race was finishing, a drunken • Maori woman fell on the course, and while the officer was attempting to remove her, the last horse came galloping in, knocked him over and trod on his head, causing some very serious bruises. The mishap did not prevent Constable Healy from attending to his duties on the, following day. .
The secret with regard to the sensational hack Matamau came out on the racecourse yesterday. He has been purchased by Mr T. 11. Hill, who, on entering him for the Hack Hurdloßace, added to his name " late Hinau." Hinau is a horse that was good enough to beat Administrator at Hastings, and it looks as if a deliberate fraud was attempted. The horse has been used for some time by cattle drovers, who, it is to bo presumed, knew something about lum. On the Opaki, however, he was entered as a maiden hack, and under a new name. .We do not believe that tlie identity of such a horse could be so easily forgotten, and are pleased to see that a protest, which will lead to a full enquiry, has been entered,
