The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1885. A MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Is epee more wishing our readers a "Merry Gbrjjstmas" we are following a custom which Las established itself ages ago, and which is as finely, honored at this period by the Ireethink&r as by the l orthodox Christian. The Season is essentially one .for iperry, .making, and wretched indeed is jie >vho, : in this ian4 of plenty, cannot do some-' tiling to Dinke iijo jiome more cheerful, : or who cannot grace his table with a roast of beef and the pi'ovej'bial plum pudding, . Despite' the low prices, at' which our farmers and stock owners: have been compelled to sell their pro- ; duce, ; aiid wiiicjii ; haye caused many an : unxious look into the dim sky of the: future, we venture ,fco ftjiijc that the present festive occasion will see sem all y/i,fc]b clear brows, and in ,the heart 1 of their .toily .circle enjoying the:good things yitjh jvhiei;, after all, they are: abundantly jessed, Pull times ij&'Vjj po.t knocked sp -loudly at the door of tl?e of the Waira-« rapa as in otW JP'? $ .the world,; even in some' pwtwijs •> .ot Npw : ' Zealand, and with brightening f)|fi?p,ects before us all wis should therefore be able for once to throw dull care to tlie winds, to grasp each otherby the hand, and to wish each other a Merry Christ-, mas and a Happy New Year, .
The Wairarapa Daily will not_be publjahed to-morrow Mowing
Messrs Lowes & lorns announce their next stock sale for the 30th lnst, ' ' Mr F. D. Polling ivill provide an excellent luncheon at liia booth at the Opaki Races on Boxing day, at a moderate charge. : Messrs Hood an! Slifevill run busses from the railway station and their jstables to the race course on Saturday and - Mon-. day. . Tenders for the haulage of timber and iron work to the Wainuioru bridge site; invited by Mr J, Dawson, close on Saturday next. The quarterly of the Delta Lodge, L.U.F., is. adjourned from Christmas Eve to January 7t.li. In the course of next week our handsome pictorial almanac, representing on this occassion a beautiful landscape, will be presented to our readers.
We remind those interested that Mr Neill's coach will 'leave Oastlepoint and Tinui on Boxing Day in time to brim? passengers to the first race run on that day at Opaki, Santa Claus, with a whole packload of Christmas gifts, has unburdened himself at the Bed House, and the varied contents of his enormous pack are now displayed tor the benefit of the "Kinder". Mrs Morris has a grand supply of turkeys, geese and other poultry, at her little shop in Queen-street, and the window contains a choice assortment of fruit. Our Wellington agent writes that Mr Jno. Young has been so busy openinc up and disposing of his last'great purchase of stock, that the advertisement of farmers' bargains in another column has been delayed to this date.
Mesßra L. J. Hooper & Co,, are now opening uptheir Christmas presents, which they are distributing at the rate of 20 per cent on all monies expended with them during the month of DecemberFrom our experience good value is being given. As the fire engine was being run out for practice last night a little boy, about five years old, ran in front and was knocked down between the wheels, the engine passing right over liim before it could be stopped, but providentially without touching the little lad, who escaped with only a fright. There is every prospect of there being a crowded house to-night to witness the farewell performance of 'the Juno Dramatic Company. A number of our leading citizens have signified their intention of being present, and the resorved chairs arc being rapidly taken up. Wo advise all who enjoy a really first-class entertainment, to patronise the Theatre this evening. Mr F. W. Temple advertises what overy housewife requires at this joyous season of the year, and without which the Christmas dinner would go very flat—the condiments for a Christmas pudding. In addition to these specialities he recommends his famous .tea, yhjch is equally good all jbljo year round, givjng pleasure without after regrets. " Mr Sorrell has shown the Napier Tekgraph a'photograph that he iB justly somewhat proud of. It is a picture taken of Mr G. D. Hamilton's five children, all of whom are standing on bare-backed horses, circus fashion, The outlines of the children, and of the animals, are clearly defined, always a difficulty when the objects to be photographed cannot be steady. ■ The streets of the borough are receiving gope extra attention just now. If the country generally is parched up, the sides of those thoroughfares which are not subjected to much'traSc are showing a crop of weeds the luxuriance of which is enough to breed envy in the hearts of the graziers. These are ncj\v being cleared off. We notice that the large stones which are gradually working up in Queenstreet are also being picked off, much to the safety of equestrians.
The Evening Press says that in reference to the motion %tt,he meeting of the Education Board yesterday morning, that Messrs A. W, BrownandJ. ?ouug])e members .of the examining Committee, 'it was proposed that Mr Blair should also :be on the Committee, whereupon Mr punny remarked that it was time their .C&a]&gan should get a little rest. The building \y\s well lighted, and the .various articles were ssplayed to great advantage, .though .ifchere' r,eajly no .option for tliiit, as .the prize takers really took their lot out pfihe'liands'.of the door-keepef. The number of visitors was very large, fsd £?G 8s was taken.
