The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1885. RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.
The manner jn. which the railway line has been managed .9! late is causing I considerable loss .to busmen people in the district, and very general dissatisfaction, We can understand that the traffic has grown very considerably, for we see the proof of it in every fourweekly return that is published; we can ajsounderstand that it is impossible in sonseque.net! to get away from all the stations at ,tbe advertised time, and the time lost cannot always be made up. But we cannot ,gee any reason in all this why the management should stand by awl allow goods to accumulate without making my effort to get them away, We have been assured by more than one business man in Masterton that they have invoices in their possession that are over a week old, but that their goodsare still lying at the station in Wellington, although they are urgently required, and the railway authorities have been written to more than once on the subjeot. It is evident that the traffic daring the summer months, at any rate, is more than can be served bythe three trains which are now running, The two passenger trains reach enormous dimensions by the time .they approach Wellington, the number of cars being also increased by tbe large quantities of wool and numbers of sheep that are being sent down just now. It appears to us that the engines are often very severely tried to get along at'all, We think that the management will find itself forced to on another train for passengers as well goods, for we see no other way of giving relief. Travellers should not be put to the annoyance, day after day, of being landed half am hour-late at their ; destination, simply because a certain quantity of goods has to be earned, and an extra amount of shunting must be done, If a: train, is a minute late at Home, the matter is inquired into. Here it appears to be expected that any train may be half an hour Jate, and the guard aiia driver may ■be congratulated if they manage to be within jtwo or three minutes of the proper time. An extra passenger and goods train would give relief to the present block, and proy.e ,of great service,to the public. We believe sat the rolling sto.ck is.available, and if so,. there is nothing to prevent the proposal from being carried put at once.
Gazette, issued yesterday morning, declares Queensland an infected place, under the Fublio Health Act 1876.
A new advertisement from Mr G, Denton, ironmonger, jeweller, etc,, of Wellington, appears elsewhere, ■ A now advertisement from Mr James King, jeweller, of Cuba.Stroet, Wellington, appears in another column: ' \ Mr F. H. %od has received inst'ructionsfrom Messrs Downes and Henderson, railway contractors, to sell the whole, of their extensive plant in connection with their Kopuaranga contract at Mauriceville on the 21st January next. Our Carterton friends will be pleased to find that they are not to be overlooked by the " Juno" Company, and that the' Lyceum will be occupied by them to-mor-row evening. A boy about 9 years of age, son of Mr Morgan, while playing with some blasting powder on Saturday, had his face and eyes severely burnt through an explosion, and he will probably bear the marks for the rest of his days, Messrs Rawson & Mackay have just re-
ceived with one of Crellers traverse tables a very ingenious mechanical contrivance for simplifying traverse addition. The instrument is very easily worked and understood, and exceedingly useful.
After another spell of dry weather heavy elouds are now gathering on. the hills, and a few drops of rain are falling even in the valley. It is to be hoped that there will be a steady day's rain, for the country needs it very much. •
Messrs Nelson Moate and Co,, the wellknown tea blenders, have a business advertisement in another column, which should be read with interest by housewives. Messrs Duncan and Sons and Mr Templo are their Masterton agents. In the Resident Magistrate's Court yostorday afternoon, H, Parnoll sued D, Tonner for £45, for injuries alleged to have been sustained through an assault, From thp evidence it appeared that the two men had an altercation atEketahuna, and that they fell over the pole of a dray, Parnell getting seyeraj rjba broken, awl sustaining other injuries. Judgment was given for £1917s and costs. Judgment for plaintiff was given in the .case? of Meehan v Cross £2 0s Gd, and J, &, G. Herbert v W. Brown £9 19s 7d. The windows of the New Zealand Clothiny Factory next to the Club Hotel were rendered very attractive yesterday by the display of a numbor of scarlet uniforms, which have been manufactured for the local Volunteer Rifle Corps, With the exception of the mountings, thewholo of the goods aro entirely of colonial production, including the helmet. The men they are ordered for express themselves highly pleased with the style, fit, and finish of the uniforms, The cost is only a trifle over tjio imported article, The Royal Hotel, Masterton, of which Mr D. E. Toohill is the proprietor, has just been thoroughly renovated and refurnished, and now presents a remarkably neat and homelike appearanco. A most comfortable fitting rgom has been added, and a room formerly occupied as a billiard room lias been converted jijto a dining room.
